Coach Vladimir Bure: If not for the lockout, Suglobov would be in the NHL

Coach Vladimir Bure has worked for more than 10 years with hockey players from the NHL, and has won the Stanley Cup twice with the New Jersey Devils (in 2000 and 2003). He told our correspondent about Alexander Suglobov.

Vladimir, if there was no lockout, would Suglobov have a place in New Jersey?
V. Bure:
In my opinion, he is ready for the NHL. Alexander started the season very well. He has a very high top speed, and handles the puck well. He is not very big, but has an athletic build and uses what he has well.

Another related question: would have Suglobov stayed in the NHL a year ago if not for the wrist injury?
V. Bure: It’s hard to say. It was his NHL debut, and he was very nervous. But everyone sees that Suglobov is a very talented forward. I’ll say it again, right now would have been his time in the NHL.

Who among the NHL stars would you compare him to in the NHL?
V. Bure: I would say he is a typical Russian player – handles the puck well, plays very well one on one, takes the game onto himself, and always aims for the net. By the way, have you noticed that Alexander often gets breakaways?

Do you believe he is developing in the AHL? Maybe it would have been better for Suglobov to play in the Super League?
V. Bure: It is difficult for me to compare. I only read about the Super League in the newspapers, but observe the AHL closely. If in the past years this league was not very interesting, and it was tough for coaches to work there because the best players were always called up to the NHL. Now, the situation is very different. In that same Albany there is a team of great and quickly developing young players. Besides Suglobov, I would note Zach Paris and Ivan Khomutov. It will be tough for the latter, since Ivan is very young. However, the coaches are happy with him and thin the guy has a bright future.

Has Suglobov already adapted?
V. Bure: Yes, he has completely adapted to his new team, and established some good relationships with the other players. Last season I helped Alexander as a translator, but now his English is at a very high level.

Was it a surprise for you that Suglobov became Albany’s top scorer from the start?
V. Bure: Back during the summer, I talked to Alexander about this, and advised him to make this his goal – to score a goal in every game. So, at the end of the season, he would have 80 goals, which would be a great result.

What coaching advice do you offer Suglobov?
V. Bure: I wish him to remain who he is. It was great to work with Alexander during the summer. There were no complaints regarding the workload. He completely fulfilled all coaching instructions. Now, as you can see, Suglobov is enjoying the fruits of his labor.
