Yesterday Alexander Ovechkin played his first game (though, preseason game) in the NHL against Buffalo.
One and a half hours before the game in front of MCI Center I noticed two guys with Ovechkin’s jerseys: one from the Russian national team with number 8 on the back, and the other one from Dynamo with Ovechkin’s number 32. Both of these fans didn’t speak any Russian, and both of them bought these jerseys on the internet. The owners of these jerseys predict a great future for Ovechkin in the NHL.
" Just write that down: I’m a personal Alex fan!" – told me one of the fans, " I purposely installed cable TV at home in order to watch him playing in Dynamo. Then I came for the first Washington Capitals practice to talk to him personally. Ovechkin is awesome! As a man, and as a player. And his family is great, too!"
Standing next to us, young fans in Washington jerseys approvingly nodded, and one of the kids asked me: " How do you say " welcome" in Russian? Dabro pozhalovat? After the game I’ll definitely say it to Ovechkin."
GETTING USED TO AMERICA
After the game I got a chance to talk to Ovechkin.
Every other Washington Capitals fan presents himself as your friend.
A. Ovechkin: Here are very friendly and easy-going people. It is fun here. Though, I don’t have Russian friends here yet, so I miss home a little bit. But I already had a chance to go to restaurant with guys from the team. As a matter of a fact, my English is getting better and better.
I’ve heard your family came here as well.
A. Ovechkin: Yes, they are here, my brother, mom, and father. Parents are going to visit me all the time: one month here, one month at home. And my brother will stay here; he’s going to go to a college, but first he needs to catch up on his English.
Do you realize that today your dream came true?
A. Ovechkin: Yes, I played my first game in the NHL. Though, it was not successful. Still, I had several chances to score. Actually, I scored in the shootout, so a goal is a goal
