Alexei Mikhnov: Who needs stats when our team lost? (Edmonton Oilers NHL)

2006 World Championships

Alexei Mikhnov at the 2000 NHL Entry Draft
Alexei Mikhnov could’ve become a real hero had we won in the quarter finals against the Czechs. It was him who was the 6th man on the ice in the dying minutes of the game when Maxim Sokolov was pulled. It was Mikhnov who tied the game at the most critical time for our team, but unfortunately he was also on the ice when the puck crawled into the net during over time.

What can you say about the Czech Republic team as an opponent?
A. Mikhnov: I can’t say much good or bad about it. It’s not the kind of opponent who we should be losing to. This was our game, our. We had to decide everything in the first period and then just play out the match.

Didn’t get lucky?
A. Mikhnov: There’s no point talking about luck or lack thereof now. Everything was in our hands and we let everything out of our hands by ourselves. We practically gave this game to our opponent.

What impressions do you have about the tournament in general? I understand that they are not the best.
A. Mikhnov: Everything started off so well when we won the first 5 games and then tied the Swedes. I won’t say that all those games were easy ones for us as there are no weak opponents at the World Championships whether it’s the Kazakhs, Belarussians or the Slovaks. By the way, the latter played quiet well at this tournament. Do you remember how we battled them? Not in our wildest dreams did we expect to be eliminated in the quarter finals. It’s really sad.

You personally though, played well.
A. Mikhnov: My stats aren’t bad, but I’m not too happy with my play. I don’t even know why. Now that our team lost, there’s no point in talking about my play or my stats. Who cares about that now?
