Alexei Emelin (Montreal Canadiens) detailed game shift-by-shift scouting report

2009 Continental Hockey League (KHL)

Kontinental Hockey League, Round 4: Shift-by-shift with Alexei Emelin (Montreal Canadiens)

For the fourth round of the Continental Hockey League, we provide in depth scouting report based on Alexei Emelin (Montreal Canadiens)'s performance. We followed the Habs prospect on a shift-by-shift analysis. He plays on the team's third line with Grigori Panin, a player who is really familiar with as they played together not only in Ak Bars, but also in Lada Togliatti and in the National Junior team.

*GAME NOTE*: 1'19" Konstantin Glazachev (Nashville Predators) breaks away with the puck burning all the opponents defense, but doesn't manage to put it past Dubielewicz

Summary: This shift started hard as he and Panin had troubles in getting out of the zone and as a result he had to clear instead of trying to build up. For the rest of the shift he touches some pucks as the team takes the tempo low to end the time without troubles.

First period summary: Not bad. He skated mostly in the defensive zone, closing down nicely and without leaving room to the opponents. He had some little mistakes, but nothing serious or dangerous for the team.

*GAME NOTE*: 26'18" Goal for Ak Bars! It's a 2-0 game when Zhukov's pass from the right hits Titov's leg and goes in the back of the net. Lucky goal, but Mikhail Zhukov (Edmonton Oilers) has made a good job behind the crease.

Passes: 1/2

Key passes:

Hits: -

Turnover: -

Takeaways: -

Penalties: -

Shoots: -

Assist: -

Goals: -

Summary: Strange shift. At first he looked unsure of what to do in his own zone, playing out of position but with the puck not arriving at his man, then he made a rush forward passing apparently to no one on the left. A well-timed dump later gets on the rushing Kuzmin, but this was a classic shift-off.

Shift#14 18'01" - 18'58"

Passes: 1/1

Key passes: -

Hits: -

Turnover: -

Takeaways: -

Penalties: -

Shoots: -

Assist: -

Goals: -

Summary: Shift spent mostly on Barys' offensive zone and Alexei hadn't too much to do.

Second period summary: In the first period he did look better, in this he was a little bit unconsistent even if he didn't lack of good defensive moments. He should be a little bit more creative with the puck.

Shift#15 - 42'07" - 43'33

Passes: 1/1

Key passes: -

Hits: -

Turnover: -

Takeaways: -

Penalties: -

Shoots: -

Assist: -

Goals: -

Summary: In the third period's first shift Emelin didn't had too much to do as it was mostly an up-and-down minute played mostly by forwards. He made another good dump to serve the quick rushing Kuzmin, but nothing else.

Shift#16 46'39" - 47'41"

Passes: 2/2

Key passes:

Hits: -

Turnover: -

Takeaways: -

Penalties: -

Shoots: -

Assist: -

Goals:

Summary: Another shift spent mostly on attack by Ak Bars. He had the puck at one moment and he was a bit on difficulty as he was pressured by the opponent defense, but he managed to serve Kapanen. He always looked at the right place, but was a bit unsure with the puck.

Shift#17 49'21" - 49'40"

Passes: -

Key passes: -

Hits: -

Turnover: -

Takeaway: -

Penalties: -

Shoots: -

Assist: -

Goals: -

Summary: Nothing to report, the forward of his team kept the puck all the shift long, arriving at a good shot with Zaripov, saved by Lamothe.

Shift#18 51'38" - 52'27"

Passes: 1/1

Key passes: -

Hits: -

Turnover: -

Takeaways: -

Penalties: -

Shoots: 1

Assist: -

Goals: -

Summary: Good shift, in which he forced himself in playing a little bit more in attack. He made well bringing the puck forward through the defensive and neutral zones, but then he didn't find a comfortable solution and decided to dump it in. The shift went on and he had a good shot chance from a good spot, but his attempt was blocked by a defender.

Shift#19 54'08" - 55'40"

Passes: -

Key passes: -

Hits: -

Turnover: -

Takeaways: -

Penalties: -

Shoots: -

Assist: -

Goals: -

Summary: Long shift, probably too much for what he could deal with. It started like the #17, but then Barys went forward and he looked tired, getting outplayed by Zhailauov on the boards, then he allowed a shot to Zhailauov himself, but it went wide.

*GAME NOTE*: 59'26" Goal for Ak Bars! Morozov shows his class and his clutch abilities scoring the probable game winner with thirty seconds to go.

Shift#19 59'26" - 60'00"

Passes: -

Key passes: -

Hits: 1

Turnover: -

Takeaways: -

Penalties: -

Shoots: -

Assist: -

Goals: -

Summary: Bilyaletdinov must trust him if he iced Alexei in the most delicate situation of the game, with the go-ahead goal just scored and the opponents without the goalkeeper. The situation risks to precipitate because of a penalty whistled against Panin, but an avoidable reaction by Kloucek puts the team at even strength. In this difficult situation Emelin did well his job, covering well his zone with also a good clean hit in the dying seconds of the game.

Third period summary: Similarly to the second period, he has been a little unconsistent and also he looked a bit tired. He played well when he had to, though, and has been iced in the most difficult moment of the match, a good sign. Also, he didn't got any penalty minute, another sign of playing well.

Emelin's game in numbers

Shoots: 1

Shoots breakdown: 1 blocked

Assist: 0

Goals: 0

+/-: even

Game summary: Alexei Emelin has played a more than decent game, looking solid back in the zone and okay when in possess of the puck. He also concluded the game even. He could have played a little bit more offensively, but what matters for a defender like him is the defensive coverage.

Grade: B-

Interesting game. The opponent was nothing special, but I believe that he played well back in his zone, stopping nicely the opponents sometimes, but also looking not out of place while with the puck. He has got a very good passing percentage, but that's only because his passes were mostly tape-to-tape. He deserves a good mark, but should be more brave and creative in the offensive zone, as he tends too much to play out of risk instead of trying to serve a team mate in a good position or to showcase his strong slapshot.
