WJC 2009: Russia wins third consecutive match

In the round-robin's third match of the World Junior Championship Russia obtains yet another win by beating Slovakia with an impressive 8-1 score, taking just 31 shot attempts to put the puck eight times in the opponents' net. Nemchinov decided to swap Alistratov with Vadim Zhelobnyuk, who replied with a very good performance rejecting 26 out of 27 shots thrown against his crease. For the Russians this game seen a trio of players who really displayed good things: Nikita Filatov (Columbus Blue Jackets) scored a hat trick, Maxim Goncharov (Phoenix Coyotes) replied with two goals, Maxim Chudinov posted four assists. The game has been played without much physical play and this allowed Russia to make prevail their better technique over a not enough prepared team Slovakia.

As usual, the Russians staied quiet in the first period, when they got battled hard by the opponents. Filatov opened the score after only two minutes with an elegant backhander after a nice feed by Sergei Andronov. The Slovaks didn't give up and tied the game at the thirteenth minute with Bezak, but a powerplay marker by Goncharov - who's having a very good tournament - put Russia again ahead. Nemchinov's team came out strong in the second period, scoring other three unanswered goals with Filatov, Igor Golovkov and Filatov again.

After the sixth goal, scored at the twenty-ninth minute, the Russians lowered the tempo in order to save energies, but eventually scored two other goals to finish the game with an 8-1 score, with Sergei Andronov - who's so far team Russia's unsong hero - and Sergei Korostin (Dallas Stars).

Team Russia will face team Sweden in the group stage's last game on Wednesday December 31st.
