January 5th: Trunevís Severstal beats Dinamo Riga

2009 U20 World Junior Championships

January 5th: Trunevís Severstal beats Dinamo Riga returns back to the KHL with a report based on the January 5th match between Severstal Cherepovets and Dinamo Riga. Maxim Trunev (Montreal Canadiens), Nikolai Lemtyugov (St. Louis Blues) and Stanislav Egorshev skated in this match for the home team who got a deserved 3-1 win against a Dinamo Riga team that proved to be less strong.

Trunev, Lemtyugov and Egorshev had all a significant ice time, while Maxim Chudinov, with team Russia at the WJC, and Yuri Alexandrov (Boston Bruins) havenít been in the lineup.

Matchís first chance came at the eight minute: despite being shorthanded of one player after a questionable call against Czech Straka, Severstal got a good rush in the offensive zone as Ladislav Nagy served Nikolai Bardin on the left and came hacked down by Westcott. The refs called a penalty and itís four on four. The home team grew and at the eleventh they were again with the man advantage as Cipruss is caught fouling around after a nice shot by Piskunov.

When the teams get at even strength Severstal has yet another chance with a nice wrist shot by Kanarsky from the right circle, but Prusek rejects with the blocker. Three minutes later Severstal gets the best chance so far. After a nice pressure on both ends Ladislav Nagy finds Nikolai Lemtyugov (St. Louis Blues) on the left. He shoots from a good position, but the attempt is deflected out of play by the Czech opponent goalie.

The game is kind of one sided and at the seventeenth minute Vadim Shipachev found Stanislav Egorshev open on the blue line, but his shot is weak and easily saved by Prusek. The home teamís pressure is finalized when the scoreboard signs the eighteenth minute: Yakubov forces Ellison off the puck and shots, Soin deflects it and fools out Prusek for the 1-0. Right after the goal Lemtyugov draws a penalty against Dinamoís Galvinsh and this means that the second period will start with the man advantage for the home team.

Severstalís powerplay doesnít produce and at the third minute the home team got called for a too many men on the ice penalty. Maxim Trunev (Montreal Canadiens) will serve in the box. Dinamo gets dangerous with Darzins, but thatís pretty much all. The guests insist and get another couple of powerplays midway through the game. At first they didnít manage to break into Severstalís tight box and has to shoot from outside, without being dangerous, but after a couple of good chances by Westcott and Nizhyvy, Ellison managed to score with a nice wrist shot despite Stana's great efforts to keep the puck out of the Severstal goal.

The guests gained momentum after Ellison's goal who insist and at the fifteenth minute Riga players get a two-on-one, but Stana robs Darzins' shot. Two minutes later Darzins got another chance, but Stana had no problem keeping this one out either as Darzins wasn't quick enough to stickhandle the puck in front of him.

The third period starts well for Severstal as Nikolai Lemtyugov (St. Louis Blues) gets a good puck on the right and eventually puts it in top shelf, but the goal is claimed void as Ladislav Nagy collided with the goalie and thus sent to the box. The goal was rightfully voided, but Nagy should have not been penalized as he was pushed against Prusek by a Dinamo defender.

One minute later, at the seventh, Marcel Hossa shoots from the blue line, kick save by Stana. Midway through the third stanza Trunevís line works very well and draws yet another penalty, with Trunev himself who got fouled down by Cipruss after picking up a rebound came from a blue line shot by Piskunov. The man advantage doubles a bunch of seconds later Westcott gets on the penalty box for delay of game. The hosts donít waste the chance and at the 53:03 marker Straka picks up a good pass by Kanarsky from the right and puts it in for his eleventh goal of the season.

One minute later Severstal has to contain another Dinamo powerplay, but itís them who get near to the third goal as Ladislav Nagy with a quick counterattack dekes out a defenders and shoots, but itís wide.

At the eighteenth minute Severstal close the game: Jozef Straka with a nice backhand pass finds Lemtyugov into the right circle. The former Peoria player one-times it and makes it 3-1 through Prusekís pads.

Dinamo tries to fight back, but Severstalís deep forechecking is effective and prevents the opponents from removing the goalkeeper for the extra attacker. The home team can thus celebrate a well deserved victory.

Severstal prospectsí report:

Stanislav Egorshev: good size, has climbed up nicely up to the first pair, playing with another raising player, Mikhail Kuklev. Heís a defensive minded player, a reliable defenseman who isnít too quick but never overdoes, itís still a little reluctant to get active at both ends of the ice, but has some potential. As witnessed by the big chance he got at the seventeenth minute, he must work on his shot. At 14í50 of the second period has joined the rush, leaving the left flank uncovered. Dinamo got a counterattack on his side, but Stana managed to save the consequent shot by Darzins.
Grade: B-

Nikolai Lemtyugov (St. Louis Blues): plays on the second line with Nagy and Gubin. He progressed a lot since his departure to America as he was a bit raw. In the AHL he has polished up his skills and his skating and today he scored his third goal since his return and the fourth point in six games. Good start.
Grade: B+

Maxim Trunev (Montreal Canadiens): he skates as right wing with Piskunov and young center Shipachev in the fourth line, letting to his linemates to play the puck, trying to get in the open spaces. His line was probably the best on ice after the Nady-Lemtyugovís one. Has a nice ability in keeping the ball rolling for his teamís rushes. His line had a very good shift at the 15th of the first period, spending a good forty seconds in the zone, pressuring the goalkeeper who had to deal with a couple of dangerous shoots by Shipachev and Piskunov. They made another good job in the start of the third player to gain the first penalty that led to Strakaís Game Winning Goal. His path towards the NHL is still long, but heís eventually progressing and lately getting interesting good ice time.
Grade: B
