04/01/2008 Semifinals - Ak Bars vs. Salavat Yulayev 4:3 (series 1:3) - Salavat advances

Super League -  Ak Bars Kazan lost the fourth and deciding semifinals game to Salavat Yulayev, which advanced to the finals. Igor Volkov (New York Islanders) again scored an important goal for Salavat. Sadly, Kazan’s Alexei Morozov (Pittsburgh Penguins)Sergei Zinovjev (Boston Bruins)Danis Zaripov line remained quiet. Still, Kazan fought hard and forced overtime in this contest, though the extra period ended early when Alexei Tereschenko (Dallas Stars) suddently threw a shot on net from the boards and Eshe was not able to handle it. Salavat advances to the finals to meet Lokomotiv.
03/31/2008 Semifinals - Ak Bars Kazan vs. Salavat Yulayev 2:4 (series 1:2)

Super League -  Denis Arkhipov and Alexander Stepanov open the scoring on a nice two on one break, taking advantage of defenseman Vitali Proshkin ’s mistake. Oleg Tverdovsky (Los Angeles Kings) ties it up with a seemingly simple shot that Robert Eshe wasn’t able to handle. Alexei Shkotov (St. Louis Blues) scored an important goal on the break away, slipping by Alexei Emelin (Montreal Canadiens) and Vyacheslav Buravchikov (Buffalo Sabres) before beating Eshe. Kazan still manages to tie the game again. Highly effective Igor Volkov (New York Islanders) scored another playoff goal to put his team up 3:2 and then Oleg Tverdovsky (Los Angeles Kings) added his second goal to put his team up 4:2. Kazan came back with a late goal by the first line, but it is too little too late and Salavat Yulayev takes a lead in the series.

Russia - Czech Republic - Exclusive RussianProspects Scouting Analysis
Talent Analysis:
Scout 1: An offensive minded forward who is best known for his sniper abilities...a technically sound skater with an above average top speed...not a defensive asset, but works hard in his own end, trying to distract opponents to force a turnover...beyond being a sniper, capable of creating scoring chances for his linemates, though more likely to shoot than to pass the puck...a crafty puckhandler...drives to the crease, though doesn’t have much size and can be controlled by more physical defenseman, though this never stops him from trying
Back In Russia:
Igor Volkov is the product of the Salavat Yulayev hockey school in Ufa, Russia. The young forward has spent most of his career with the club, only once switching teams for a stint with HC Dynamo for the 2004-05 season playoffs, during which the Moscow based club won the Super League (Russia 1) title, though Volkov was largely reduced to a supporting cast role rather from the key sniper position he usually holds with HC Salavat Yulayev. 2006-07: Volkov has re-signed with HC Salavat Yulayev for another year, with potential intentions to come over to North America during the summer of 2008 and join the New York Islanders. The young forward continued to perform well for his club, developing beyond being just a straightforward goal scorer. Additionally, he got his first serious look on Russia’s national team, earning significant playing time at the Karjala Cup EuroTour tournament.
NHL Outlook:
Igor Volkov is a prospect of the New York Islanders, who drafted him 246th overall in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. The young forward was drafted as an overage pick due to his speed and ability to consistently put the puck in the net. He has continued to hone those and other skills since being drafted and could potentially develop into a second line forward at the NHL level, who would also be a power play specialist. Already 23 years old, Volkov has matured to a level that he is ready to test his abilities at a New York Islanders training camp and potentially earn a spot on the Islanders, or start the 2007-08 campaign in Bridgeport. He is definitely one of the better Russian forward prospects the Islanders currently have, better than Dmitry Chernykh, Evgeny Tunik or Andrei Ogorodnikov, though the latter continues to develop in the AHL.
