07/17/2004 Profile of Konstantin Baranov (Philadelphia Flyers #126/2002) has been added to RussianProspects!
Talent Analysis:
Skating: One of his strengths...very well balanced and is tough to knock down...has an above average top speed... capable of a quick burst of speed. Shot: Has a good, precise wrist shot...doesn’t tend to shoot the puck from the perimeter, preferring to pass it off, or bring it in close to the net. Technical Ability: A very good puck handler with soft hands...handles the puck well on high speeds. Pass: Makes precise passes with his soft hands. Hockey Sense: Sees the ice well and creates scoring chances for his linemates...creative in the opposition’s zone and distributes the puck more often than shooting. Defensive Play: Not a defensively oriented player...plays ethically in his own zone and doesn’t cause problems, but doesn’t tend to be much help either...usually waits for an opportunity to take the puck up the ice. Physical Play: Possesses an average, 6’0 and 165 lb frame... does not avoid physical contact, but doesn’t tend to seek it either...tries to fight at the boards, but his effectiveness is limited. Overall: Konstantin Baranov is a classic European forward, who is creative, fast and technically sound. However, he is not a big player, and is not of much help in his own zone. He sees the ice very well, and adapts well to his line mates.
Back In Russia:
2003-04 Season: Konstantin Baranov spent the 2003-04 season with the Avangard Omsk. The club took their time with the young forward, and after he spent the majority of the 2002-03 season on loan with CSKA Moscow and Salavat Yulayev, Baranov finally earned a spot in Omsk’s lineup. The young forward spent most of the season on Avangard’s fourth line, getting less than 8-10 minutes of ice time per game. At times he did fill in for injured players on Avangard’s top two lines, but the majority of the time he spent on the last line, as the club was fighting to get back into the playoff race. The fact that Baranov spent the entire season with Avangard is quite an achievement, considering the level of players and relative wealth of the club. He gained a lot of valuable experience that season, especially in the playoffs, where he played in every game, helping his club win the Super League championship. 2002-03 season: Baranov started the season with Avangard, but was soon loaned to Salavat Yulayev, where he received more ice time. He was then recalled by Avangard and in December, but was soon loaned again to a Super League newcomer, CSKA Moscow. There he started off well, skating on the club’s second line with Alexei Shkotov (St. Louis Blues) during December break exhibition games in Finland. The two played very well together, and continued their success when the regular season restarted in early January. However, as time when on, Baranov’s production cooled down a bit, though the whole team struggled and he was still one CSKA’s top forwards. During the February transfer period, Avangard recalled Baranov, who then spent the rest of the season and the playoffs either in reserve or on the club’s fourth line.
NHL Outlook:
After a surprisingly solid 2001-02 season in Russia Super League, the Philadelphia Flyers picked Konstantin Baranov in the 5th round, with their 126th overall selection. While the young forward has not yet broken out on any Super League club, he clearly merited a draft pick and his upside is significant. He continues to grow each year, and has already completed his third Super League season. As with Konstantin Rudenko, another one of Philadelphia’s fast, creative Russian prospects, the Flyers are taking their time with Baranov. He may be ready for a serious look after he gets another Super League season under his belt in 2004-05. Hopefully, he will be able to earn more responsibility with Avangard in his second full season with the club.
