Talent Analysis:
Size & Physical Play: Viktor Bobrov has physically solid. He stands at 6""2 and weighs 176 pounds. His frame doesn""t yet have the power, but Viktor puts forth a lot of effort and can play physically against older, physically stronger opponents. About the same size as Tunik, he is not as physically mature yet and will bulk up with time. Skating: Viktor""s skating is above average. He is a fast skater with a good stride. Shot: Viktor""s shot of choice is his wrist shot. It""s strong and precise. He doesn""t use his slap shot enough to really give it a grade. Technical Skills: Viktor is technical player with good, above average puck handling skills and stick control. He is not quite as skilled as Zherdev or Tunik with the puck, but he is a much closer match to those two players then people might think and his style is somewhat similar. Hockey Sense: Viktor""s vision of the ice is about average or slightly above average for the Upper League and is improving. He sees the ice relatively well, but hesitates to go at it alone, and usually passes the puck off to someone else early on as the play is developing. Viktor is more of a finisher then a developer. He would rather let someone else develop the play and then appear in the right place at the right time to accept a one timer or a pass and put the puck in the net. He is developing into a respectable finisher, especially over the past season. Mental Game: Viktor Bobrov has gained a lot of confidence since being loaned by CSKA to Elemash Elektrostal this year. At first he skated on the lower lines, where he had little impact. However, after a few games he was fielded on the veteran line and effectively put his game together. Viktor is well regarded by his teammates. Defense: Viktor takes defense very seriously. He is an asset on the power kill and plays a solid, physical style, helping his team out of trouble. Tough to get around next to the boards and uses his long reach to poke the puck away. Overall: Viktor Bobrov is a capable two way forward with no blaring strengths or deficiencies. His skating, defensive ability and shot are above average. Viktor needs to further develop his hockey sense, passing and bulk up his frame.
Back In Russia:
2002-03 Season Review: Bobrov was a pleasant surprise in 2002-03. He emerged from relative obscurity to become one of the leading forwards on Upper League
NHL Outlook:
Calgary Flames drafted Viktor Bobrov 146th overall in the 5th round of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. Viktor was unranked by the CSB, but his frame and scoring for CSKA""s second team made him an attractive flyer for Calgary to take. At the time of the draft he seemed an average player with decent size. He was average all around with no clear strengths or weaknesses. Since being drafted, however, Viktor has made significant progress and may be regarded a gem in the rough for Calgary thus far in his career. He has improved from average to above average in many categories including skating and defensive play. Bobrov competes effectively against adults in Russia""s second league, the Upper League. Bobrov will likely make a jump to the Super League with CSKA Moscow next year. Tikhonov likes young, hard working players and Bobrov certainly qualifies. Viktor""s upside is a third line left wing with second unit power play and power kill duties.
