| SKA St. Petersburg strengthens ranks by signing Korolyuk and But
Continental Hockey League (KHL) - Former NHL player Alex Korolyuk and former NHL prospect Anton But (Tampa Bay Lightning) have both switched clubs and signed deals with HC SKA (St. Petersburg). It appears that Korolyuk’s chances of returning to the NHL are next to zero, as the veteran forward has declined his last opportunity after the New Jersey – San Jose trade last year. The forward has since skated for HC Atlant (Mytistische), where he took on a smaller role, but unsuccessfully attempted to win the Gagarin Cup. But has had a sub-par season for HC CSKA and has since been waived by that club and claimed by the now defunct KHL club HC Khimik (which has left the KHL and has been replaced by HC Avtomobilist from Ekaterinburg). Another player on the move to St. Petersburg is a former NHLer from the Czech Republic, Petr Cajanek, who has already skated several seasons in Russia and is considered a very versatile veteran player. All these moves have been strengthening the St. Petersburg based club that unfortunately fizzled out early in last year’s playeoffs despite a high payroll and hefty expectations

| Quarterfinals - Lokomotiv vs. SKA 2:1 (series 3:1) Yashin leads Loko forward
Super League - HC Lokomotiv defeated HC SKA in four games to be the third team to enter the semifinals, leaving HC Dynamo vs. HC Metallurg Mg. as the last remaining unresolved contest. Alexei Yashin was key in victory, scoring the first goal by collecting a loose puck in front of the net, and then assisting Czech forward Irgl on the game winner. Semen Varlamov (Washington Capitals) was very strong in the game, resolving any outstanding questions after his shaky start a few games back. He stopped a nice breakaway from Anton But (Tampa Bay Lightning) and well deserved the top star honors. | | 04/23/2007

| Rumor Central: Anton But on his way to join the Tampa Bay Lightning
Rumor has it that Tampa Bay Lightning prospect Anton But may shortly join the NHL club on a one year deal. The young forward has recently been released by his Super League club, HC Lokomotiv. The release occurred amicably and was similar to that of Andrei Taratukhin (Calgary Flames) and Alexei Mikhnov (Edmonton Oilers), who are the other two Lokomotiv players who are looking to continue their careers in the NHL. The potential of But joining the Lightning this fall has been confirmed by a source close to the Lokomotiv organization. Anton But was consistently one of Lokomotiv’s top scorers during the past several seasons, but his NHL future was in doubt, as the young forward was unwilling to come over for several years even after Tampa Bay acquired his rights from the New Jersey Devils. | | 05/07/2006
| Anton But (Tampa Bay Lightning) skips World Championships due to injury
World Championships - One of Russia’s top scorers this season and a top candidate for the national team Anton But (Tampa Bay Lightning) is currently missing the World Championships due to injury. The young forward has reportedly suffered an adductor muscle injury and is currently recovering at home. In an interview with the Sport Express newspaper, Lokomotiv’s head coach confirmed that the young prospect skated for most of the playoffs while nursing an injury. | | 09/24/2005

| Back In Russia: |
2002-03 Season Review: Anton But started the season off red hot, leading the Super League in points and goals. After two months, he leveled off a bit and the coaching staff moved him around the deep Lokomotiv lineup. But showed a very mature game, following up a mediocre 2001-02 season with a strong performance. The young forward also earned a couple of invitations to the national team, though it seemed the busy scheduled fatigued him.
2001-2002 Update:
During the 2000-01 season Anton But established himself as of the leading snipers in Russian hockey. At the end of the season he earned on of the top honors in hockey |
| NHL Outlook: |
| Anton was selected by the New Jersey Devils with their 5th pick (119th) overall in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. Anton But is considered to be one of New Jerseys top prospects. As of November 2000, prior to his strong break out 2000-01 season, Anton But was ranked 6th among the NHL drafted players still playing in Russia. Since then But has been traded by New Jersey to Tampa Bay, in a deal that involved defenseman Andrei Zyzin. Unfortunately, Tampa Bay was unable to sign the talented forward during the summer of 2003. He will likely have a nother strong season with Lokomotiv and garner a contract offer during the summer of 2004 |
