Talent Analysis:
Alexander Polushin has the great size, standing at 6’3 and 200 pounds. He possesses great speed and control on the ice. He handles the puck very well. Alexander uses his size well in traffic and always seems to look around the ice for opportunities. In his arsenal, he has a great, sharp pass to take advantage of those opportunities that remains effective in heavy traffic. He is very stable and is hard to knock off the puck. Alexander also possesses a very strong and crisp shot. It doesn’t always find its target, but the release is solid, as is its strength. Alexander plays very good team hockey and seems to always know where his partners are, but is also a scoring threat of his own. To add to his offensive talent, Alexander is a solid two way forward. Defensively he was responsible and worked hard against the boards. He does not deliver many hits, but can certainly absorb them. Overall, Alexander is a thinking player and is developing into a complete package with solid offensive and defensive skills.
Back In Russia:
Alexander Polushin was born in the Russian industrial town of Kirov, and began his career in Kirov’s hockey school. He soon was invited to join Dynamo Moscow’s hockey system and started to steadily climb the organization’s ranks. During the 2000-01 season, Alexander played relativey well for Dynamo’s junior Dynamo 2 team, earning 7 points (3+4) in 18 games. His performance earned him a promotion this past season to Dynamo’s immediate farm team, THK Tver that competes in the Upper League. There he played there entire season and was one of the team’s top snipers with 15 points (10+5) in 38 games. After a disagreement with Dynamo’s management, Alexander joined Viktor Tikhonov’s HC CSKA prior to the beginning of the 01-02 season. With HC CSKA, Alexander established himself as a premier two way player in the Russian Upper League. This past season he helped his team ascend back into the Super League. He had a very productive season and was once again invited to join Russia’s U20 National Team. He has been a member of the Russian ’82 National Team since it’s inception. He did not disappoint with a great performance at the 2002 U20 WJC.
NHL Outlook:
Alexander Polushin was drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning, 47th overall in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. Alexander was projected to go much higher in the draft, but due to his "project" label, he dropped into the second round. He did not disappoint Tampa’s management and delivered a solid, better then expected 2001-02 season. Alexander will continue to play for HC CSKA this coming season. His abilities will be put to the test in the more competitive Super League. Alexander struggled while adjusting to the Super League in 2002-03 season and Tampa Bay decided not to bring the young forward over to North America just yet. He will continue playing for CSKA Moscow, and will likely come over after the 2003-04 season.
