Lada today announced that the Super League club will not resign the Tampa Bay forward Dmitri Afanasenkov to another contract. Reportedly, the club’s management was not pleased with the player’s performance. Afanasenkov only managed to 11 points (2+9) during the 30 regular season games, and was held pointless in the playoffs, despite Lada’s long stay and a finals appearance. If the NHL lockout concludes, the RSL negotiations will prove to be irrelevant. However, if the lockout continues, Afanasenkov will have to look for a new club.
Sweden Games (EuroTour) - Team Russia’s coach Vladimir Plyuschev announced some of the invitees to the squad’s training camp that will take place prior to the Sweden Games, the final leg of the EuroTour competition. The list will include the long awaited debut of 2004 NHL Entry Draft’s second overall pick Evgeni Malkin (Pittsburgh Penguins). According to a Soviet Sport interview with Vladimir Plyuschev, if Malkin did not skate for Russia at the U20 WJC, he would have already been a member of the squad at December’s ROSSNO cup in Moscow.
Besides Malkin, the roster will also include veteran Alexander Skugarev, Alexander Semin (Washington Capitals), Dmitri Afanasenkov (Tampa Bay Lightning), Maxim Kondratiev (New York Rangers), and a newcomer to the national team, Denis Metlyuk.
