Back In Russia:
Glukhov is a product of the Khimik Vosskresensk hockey system. The young forward rose quickly through Vosskresensk’s school and made his Super League debut during the 2000-01 season. While Gloukhov was clearly one of the club’s top up and coming forwards, the proper situation never arose where he could earn significant ice time with the club. 2001-02 season: He spent most of the 2002-03 season with the big club, but that, unfortunately, was in the High League (Russia 2). The increased ice time did help his development, but his ability to perform at the Super League level was still in question. 2003-04 season: Glulkhov’s first real opportunity came during the 2003-04, when he spent 28 games with the club in Khimik, but during that span he was reduced to fourth line duty and failed to earn a point. Gloukhov’s situation was further complicated by the arrival of several young prospects from the neighboring Elektrostal, as ’84 born Krikunov and Shevjev began to seriously eat into the young prospect’s minutes during the 2003-04 season, and again during the 2004-05 season. 2004-05 season: After failing to secure a spot in the lineup during the 2004-05 season, Gloukhov made the decision to jump to North America. Consdering the fact that for the third season in a row he was relegated to a minimal role with Khimik, Gloukhov made a solid decision. After signing a two way deal with Tampa Bay, the young prospect was assigned to the ECHL’s Victoria Salmon Kings. Glukhov proved more than capable of competing in the ECHL, coming into his own towards the end of his stint in Victoriaville. Towards the end of the season, he signed a tryout contract with Tampa’s AHL affiliate the Springflield Falcons, skating for the club in three games and clearly looking like he belongs at this level of competition.
NHL Outlook:
Alexei Gloukhov was drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 9th round of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, 286th overall. The NHL club was likely attracted by the young forward’s impressive size and overall skill level. A playmaker, Gloukhov possesses a lot of raw skill, but does not have a very impressive offensive upside. His NHL upside is that of a utility third line forward, who would be able to effectively fill in if injury strikes someone down on the top two lines, but would otherwise spend his time quietly amassing 40 points on the third line. Gloukhov’s arrival in North America may have been a more of desperation, but it was the correct move if he wanted to make the NHL club’s officials notice him, something that he wasn’t doing in Vosskresensk by sitting on the bench.
