01/07/2010 Top 5 reasons why Russia failed at WJC

U20 World Junior Championships -  Team Russia's sixth place at the last WJC in Saskatchewan, Canada, was nothing short of a failure. It was the worst result of the team since 2001, when the team lead by Petr Vorobiev couldn't get any better than the seventh place on the home soil. That team, just like this one, wasn't short of talent, considering that the team's front men were the likes of Ilya Kovalchuk (Atlanta Thrashers), Anton Volchenkov (Ottawa Senators) and Denis Grebeshkov (Edmonton Oilers). This year's roster included many talented players as well, like Nikita Filatov (Columbus Blue Jackets), Vladimir Tarasenko , Dmitri Orlov (Washington Capitals) and others, but the tournament didn't really finish like expected and team Russia was left out of the medal round after five straight apparitions. 05/02/2009 Russia picks apart United States

World Championships -  BERN, Switzerland -- Russia scored three power-play goals to beat the United States 4-1 in the second round of the ice hockey world championship on Saturday. The U.S. took an early lead but paid for committing too many penalties as Russia rallied to make it 3-1 at the end of the first period. Russia got another power-play goal early in the second, and the Americans never looked close to a comeback in the teams' first meeting at the worlds in five years. Defending champion Russia secured a spot in the quarterfinals as a top seed, having won Group E with a game to spare. "This was the best game so far for us," defenseman Denis Grebeshkov (Edmonton Oilers). "I know the real potential of our team so that is the way we should play every night." 03/22/2009 Denis Grebeshkov out to prove he belongs

National Hockey League (NHL) -  Mistakes? Denis Grebeshkov (Edmonton Oilers) has made a few. But he's now one of the mainstays on the Edmonton Oilers' defensive corps. And he wants to stay put. His agent, Todd Diamond, said on Monday that they engaged in exploratory contract talks with the Oilers prior to the trade deadline. The longer the term, the better added Grebeshkov. Two or three years would be ideal. (article by Joanne Ireland of The Edmonton Journal) READ MORE

Scouting Evaluations:
Russia - Czech Republic - Exclusive RussianProspects Scouting Analysis
Talent Analysis:
Denisde Grebeshkov is a solid defenseman with a promising offensive upside. He possesses impressive speed and great coordination. One of Denis""s most impressive qualities is his work ethic. He fears no one
Back In Russia:
2002-03 Season Review: Grebeshkov performed strongly in the preseason and earned himself duty on Lokomotiv
NHL Outlook:
Denis Grebeshkov is eligible for the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. The Los Angeles Kings selected him with their first and 18th overall pick, making him the first Russian defender selected in the draft. With the departure of Rob Blake, Los Angeles needs a puck moving defenseman for the future and Alexander may fill that need a couple of years. He attended the 2001 NHL Entry Draft where several of his teammates got drafted, but found out in Florida that he was not eligible. He is the second highest ranked European defenseman in the ""02 draft, standing behind only another Russian, Anton Babchuk. Though Denis will never command Anton Babchuk""s physical presence on the ice, but he may develop into a solid all around defenseman. Denis has the potential of being a top four NHL defenseman. He is already mature beyond his age and has earned the trust of Vladimir Vujtek, the head coach of Super League""s gold winning team. Denis is NHL ready for this upcoming season on the third or fourth line. However, such a move may seriously hurt his long term development. Denis should stay in Russia for at least another season. In 2002-03, he earned a spot on Lokomotiv's top two defensive pairings and has also seen a lot of ice time with the national team. During the summer of 2003, Los Angeles signed Denis Grebeshkov to a rookie deal. His chance of making the NHL club out of the training camp are not as likely as being sent down to Manchester and get some seasoning in the AHL.
