| Top 5 reasons why Russia failed at WJC
U20 World Junior Championships - Team Russia's sixth place at the last WJC in Saskatchewan, Canada, was nothing short of a failure. It was the worst result of the team since 2001, when the team lead by Petr Vorobiev couldn't get any better than the seventh place on the home soil. That team, just like this one, wasn't short of talent, considering that the team's front men were the likes of Ilya Kovalchuk (Atlanta Thrashers), Anton Volchenkov (Ottawa Senators) and Denis Grebeshkov (Edmonton Oilers).
This year's roster included many talented players as well, like Nikita Filatov (Columbus Blue Jackets), Vladimir Tarasenko , Dmitri Orlov (Washington Capitals) and others, but the tournament didn't really finish like expected and team Russia was left out of the medal round after five straight apparitions. | Russia picks apart United States
World Championships - BERN, Switzerland -- Russia scored three power-play goals to beat the United States 4-1 in the second round of the ice hockey world championship on Saturday. The U.S. took an early lead but paid for committing too many penalties as Russia rallied to make it 3-1 at the end of the first period. Russia got another power-play goal early in the second, and the Americans never looked close to a comeback in the teams' first meeting at the worlds in five years. Defending champion Russia secured a spot in the quarterfinals as a top seed, having won Group E with a game to spare. "This was the best game so far for us," defenseman Denis Grebeshkov (Edmonton Oilers). "I know the real potential of our team so that is the way we should play every night." | Denis Grebeshkov out to prove he belongs
National Hockey League (NHL) - Mistakes? Denis Grebeshkov (Edmonton Oilers) has made a few. But he's now one of the mainstays on the Edmonton Oilers' defensive corps. And he wants to stay put. His agent, Todd Diamond, said on Monday that they engaged in exploratory contract talks with the Oilers prior to the trade deadline. The longer the term, the better added Grebeshkov. Two or three years would be ideal. (article by Joanne Ireland of The Edmonton Journal)

Canadian Junior Leagues - On the New year's eve the Dallas Stars gave Ivan Vishnevsky (Dallas Stars) a very nice gift as he has been phoned by the main club's board, who communicated to him that he has been called up to the NHL. SHOTS: 25 (7, 6, 12) - 34 (9, 17, 8).
Game Notes: Russia won a close contest against Finland, taking a seeming insurmountable 4:1 lead into the third period. The Finns two quick tallies early in the third period, both of them not really Vasily Koshechkin (Tampa Bay Lightning)'s fault, though on at least one of the goals he was out of position on a quick one timer and did not move laterally fast enough to stop the puck. Fortunately, then Petr Schastlivy (Phoenix Coyotes) scored on a nice feed from Denis Grebeshkov (New York Islanders) with a precise wrist shot while Norrena was screened by a defenseman. Even though the Finns scored again with six minutes left, Russia closed the gates for the rest of the period and had a couple of great scoring chance to extend the lead, not allowing Norrena to empty the net for a sixth forward.

| Denis Grebeshkov traded to Edmonton Oilers
Russian Super League - The Islanders today traded defenseman Denis Grebeshkov to the Edmonton Oilers for defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron and a 3rd round pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. Grebeshkov, originally a first round selection by the Los Angeles Kings, was traded to New York last season and spent several months with the Islanders. The NHL club could not reach a one way agreement with the young defenseman and he concequently signed a one year deal with HC Lokomotiv in Russia. There, he has been one of the club’s top four defensemen and has also skated for the Russian national team, likely representing his country at the 2007 World Championships. | | 01/24/2007
| Round 44 - Grigorenko regains scoring touch
Russian Super League - Denis Grebeshkov (New York Islanders) has picked up his scoring, adding his 5th of the season for HC Lokomotiv in the club’s victory over the favored HC Khimik. Evgeni Artukhin (Tampa Bay Lightning) did not score, but managed to break the glass next to the penalty box with a bone-crushing shoulder check. In the day of underdogs, HC Dynamo tied up top HC Ak Bars 2:2 behind a strong effort from Igor Mirnov (Ottawa Senators) and former NHLer Alexander Kharitonov, who were involved in both goals. Igor Grigorenko (Detroit Red Wings) has again found his scoring touch in the past few games, scoring his 9th of the season with Vasily Koshechkin (Tampa Bay Lightning) stopping 27 of the 28 faced shots. | Denis Grebeshkov (New York Islanders) suspended for NHL caliber hit
Russian Super League - Denis Grebeshkov (New York Islanders) was suspended for a hit he made on a young Soviet Wings forward and former rated prospect Alexander Goroshansky. Grebeshkov met the forward when the latter was skating into the zone with the puck, but also with his head down. The resulting impact was unexpected from Goroshansky side and resulted in the 86 born forward laying on the ice for several minutes unconscious before a stretcher was brought over to carry him off the ice. The resulting injury included a concussion and a broken jaw. The replays showed that the hit was clean and legal by NHL standards, but considering the resulting injury and the difference in rules between the NHL and the Russian Super League, it was deemed illegal and Grebeshkov was given a match penalty. He was then suspended for a single game, but the suspension was recently expanded to five games after further review and the surfacing of the seriousness of the injury to Goroshansky. Goroshansky is expected to make a full recovery in two to three months. | | 09/15/2006

| Denis Grebeshkov takes full advantage of first NHL opportunity with the Los Angeles Kings.
Denis Grebeshkov is using his first NHL opportunity to the fullest. The young blue liner, who was recently recalled from the Kings’ AHL affiliate, has skated in two games for the NHL club, averaging 17 minutes per game. Grebeshkov’s play has been very mature and he looked especially strong in the first contest against Anaheim. Despite his solid play, it is unclear for how long Grebeshkov will remain in Los Angeles, as the NHL club’s injured blue liners are projected to return in the coming weeks, and the team has recently acquired veteran defenseman Nathan Dempsey from the Chicago Blackhawks. One this if absolutely clear: Grebeshkov is making a positive impression in his NHL debut. | | 02/27/2004

| Back In Russia: |
| 2002-03 Season Review: Grebeshkov performed strongly in the preseason and earned himself duty on Lokomotiv |
| NHL Outlook: |
| Denis Grebeshkov is eligible for the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. The Los Angeles Kings selected him with their first and 18th overall pick, making him the first Russian defender selected in the draft. With the departure of Rob Blake, Los Angeles needs a puck moving defenseman for the future and Alexander may fill that need a couple of years. He attended the 2001 NHL Entry Draft where several of his teammates got drafted, but found out in Florida that he was not eligible. He is the second highest ranked European defenseman in the ""02 draft, standing behind only another Russian, Anton Babchuk. Though Denis will never command Anton Babchuk""s physical presence on the ice, but he may develop into a solid all around defenseman. Denis has the potential of being a top four NHL defenseman. He is already mature beyond his age and has earned the trust of Vladimir Vujtek, the head coach of Super League""s gold winning team. Denis is NHL ready for this upcoming season on the third or fourth line. However, such a move may seriously hurt his long term development. Denis should stay in Russia for at least another season. In 2002-03, he earned a spot on Lokomotiv's top two defensive pairings and has also seen a lot of ice time with the national team. During the summer of 2003, Los Angeles signed Denis Grebeshkov to a rookie deal. His chance of making the NHL club out of the training camp are not as likely as being sent down to Manchester and get some seasoning in the AHL. |
