10/15/2007 Sergei Anshakov (Pittsburgh Penguins) resurfaces with HC Amur

Super League -  Once highly touted and still promising 23 year old prospect Sergei Anshakov (Pittsburgh Penguins) resurfaced in Khabarovsk, reportedly about to sign with the local Super League hockey club Amur. The young forward started the 2006-07 season with HC CSKA, but left the club after a few months, moving to HC Sibir, where he had even less fortune. In an interview last year, Bykov stated that he had no problems with Anshakov’s effort, but that the young forward just could not produce despite the hard worth ethic. This comforting to hear since Anshakov struggled to find a consistent home for several seasons prior to that due to his reported off-ice issues.
12/13/2006 Sergei Anshakov (Pittsburgh Penguins) waived by HC CSKA

Russian Super League -  Sergei Anshakov (Pittsburgh Penguins) was waived by HC CSKA. While the player has had a history of issues off the ice, the club’s head coach Bykov underlined that this was not the reason for his release and Anshakov has matured and has been very responsible. The reason for his departure, according to Bykov, is Anshakov’s lack of scoring thus far this season with just 5 points (2g+3a) in 29 games. The young forward’s future club is uncertain, but he has played well this season despite the lack of scoring and will likely catch on elsewhere.

Scouting Evaluations:
Vadim Golubtsov shift by shift scouting analysis
Talent Analysis:
Sergei has a great drive for the net and makes most of his scoring chances. One of his most admirable qualities is that he does not give up on a play until the game is stopped or his team scores. He is a powerful skater with large strides. Sergei is also an excellent stick handler with above average puck handing ability. He has a very good shot
Back In Russia:
2002-03 Season Review: Anshakov made a slow transition to the Super League. He was given plenty of chances early in the season, but failed to deliver. After being benched for about a month, the young winger returned to the lineup to fill in for an injured player and made some impact, showing improvement and sticking in the lineup for the rest of the season. His productivity and ice time were both significantly reduced when compared to last year in the Upper League. The winger did manage to make a strong impact on the U20 national team, making the U20 WJC roster, and winning the gold with the Russian squad.

Sergei Anshakov was raised in Moscow and first started his hockey career with Vyimpel Hockey School in Moscow under the tutelage of Alexei Yarushkin. During the two of the three years he spent with the team, Alexander was the captain of the team. He then left to join the Dynamo Moscow system under Boris Golts
NHL Outlook:
The Los Angeles Kings used their second round pick in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft to select Sergei Anshakov 50th overall. Sergei's team, HC CSKA Moscow, has ascended into the Super League, which will give him a chance to compete at a higher level of hockey. It remains to be seen if Sergei's vision of the ice will improve with experience. Sergei also needs to find the hunger and improve his discipline and dedication to the game if he wants to compete in the NHL. Also, if he continues to ignore his line mates and keep his head down, in some game he may run into a wall like Anton Babchuk and suffer the consequences. Sergei was not present at the 2002 NHL Entry Draft because HC CSKA did not release him. He had some trouble adjusting to the Super League level of hockey. He will get another chance during 2003-04 season, but if he does not improve, Anshakov may be overtaken by some other prospects in the youth rich CSKA Moscow farm system.
