Talent Analysis:
Size and Physical Game: Mikhail stands at 6’1 and 190 pounds. He can lay on a good hit in the open ice, but mainly tries to stay positionally sound and doesn’t usually go out of his way. Mikhail can play aggressively and tie a guy up well next to the boards, but needs more experience and confidence to physically carry himself effectively in the Super League. Skating: Mikhail has a good stride. He does need to improve his first step
Back In Russia:
Mikhail Lyubushin started his career in Spartak’s hockey school. He did not get his breakthrough opportunity with the Spartak, and 99-00 Mikhail joined the Soviet Wings hockey school. During the 2000-01 : season he got his first chance in the Upper League with the Soviet Wings. That same year the Soviet Wings made their way to the Super League. The management of the Wings did not have as much confidence in Mikhail’s abilities and sent him to the Upper League’s THK Tver for the first part of the 2001-02 : season. They then recalled him to the Super League and Mikhail became a solid contributor on the squad. The 2002-03 season has gone well for Mikhail. With the departure of Volchenkov to the NHL and Denisov to Salavat Yulayev, Lyubushin and Korneev took over the man bulk of the first defensive pairing duties. He has also been invited to the National team and earned the gold with the squad at the U20 World Junior Championships. 2002-03: Mikhail Lyubushin earned a spot in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, a year after he became eligible, by skating for Russian Super League’s 2001-02 Cinderalla club, the newly promoted Soviet Wings. While he did not have an impact role with the squad, he did receive enough minutes a game to be noticed by the scouts and the Russian national team coaches. This past season Lyubushin returned to the Soviet Wings, which were now in a different financial situation, struggling to find a stable sponsor. Due to the club’s financial difficulties, the young blueliner was promoted to the top defensive pairing. He peformed quite well during his unexepected promotion and helped the team stay respectible, if not competitive. 2003-04 Outlook: The Soviet Wings made an exit from the Super League back to the Upper League after just a two year stay and a playoff birth the previous season. With the club’s departure from Russia’s top league, Mikhail Lyubishin left as well. At first he was favored to go to Kazan, following his club’s head coach, who took an assistant coach position with Ak Bars. However, the young defender decided to remain in Moscow, and signed with Dynamo Moscow for the 2003-04 season. Lyubushin had some troubles adjusting to his new team and was hurt by Atlanta Thrashers top defensive prospect Ilya Nikulin remaining with Dynamo and a homecoming of a Dynamo Moscow defensive product and Washington Capitals prospect Igor Schadilov. The crowded blue line is good news for Dynamo fans, but may mean a long season for Mikhail Lyubushin.
NHL Outlook:
Mikhail is a bit of a late-bloomer
