08/03/2008 Preseason roundup: Timofei Shishkanov (St. Louis Blues) nets a hattrick with new club

Timofei Shishkanov (St. Louis Blues) impressed with a hattrick in a preseason debut with his new Russian club, HC SKA (St. Petersburg) against HC MVD. The young forward was traded this summer from HC CSKA to HC SKA after a strong season with the Moscow club. Shishkanov will now skate for US coach Barry Smith, who enjoyed significant success with HC SKA last season despite late season struggles and a relatively early playoff exit. Former NHL goalie Robert Esche also made his debut for HC SKA. This will be his second season in Russia after skating for HC Ak Bars last season. Sergei Soin (Nashville Predators) was another player worth watching, as he helped Severstal keep it close with HC Ak Bars in another preseason contest. The talented center had a hand in both of his club’s goals in the 2:3 loss.

Talent Analysis:
One great word that can describe Sergei Soin on the ice is "intensity". Sergei Soin possesses a great raw talent. He is an excellent skater with great pick up acceleration and overall skating speed. The burst at which he can accelerate makes him a standout against the best opponents. He also has great puck handling and a booming shot to go along with his speed. However, Sergei is not a complete package on offense due to his inability to see and use his linemates. He can make decent passes, but rarely uses his line mates, preferring to take the puck up the ice himself against entire opponent’s team. Defensively, Sergei is very effective because he combines his explosive speed with great anticipation of the opponents moves. He can intercept a pass and explode into the offensive zone before the opponent can provide a sufficient defense. His rash judgment and over commitment can get him in trouble, but Sergei’s exceptional reaction and quick decisions may develop into his key weapons as he becomes a smarter player. Sergei is also not afraid to fight for the puck next to the boards or take a hit. He is a solid forechecker and has a frame that can handle physical hockey. At some points in his career Sergei has been used as a defenseman, but during the 2001-02 season he established himself as a winger with the Soviet Wings in the Russian Super League. Overall, Sergei is a ball of energy and is a constant threat while he is on the ice. He is an exciting player to watch and will become more productive as he learns to better use his line mates.
Back In Russia:
Sergei saw his first extended appearance on the Soviet Wings main squad in the Super Leauge during the 1998-99 season. He started to get significant ice time towards the end of the regular season and spent all 14 games of the Relegation Tournament in the main lineup. The reason for the increased ice time was that due to financial vows, the Soviet Wings lost a lot of players and was forced to use younger, cheaper ones like Sergei. This may have been a blessing in disguise for Sergei, as he received a valuable chance to solidify a spot on the main lineup. Sergei has held a spot in the main lineup of the Soviet Wings the last three years, appearing in at least 30 games each season. During the 2000-01 season the Soviet Wings have finally ascended back into the Super League. During the 2001-02 season, Sergei played on the Soviet Wings’ third line and effectively competed on the higher level of hockey in the Super League. Sergei’s production suffered due to his tendency to offensively try to do everything himself, but he clearly showed that his game has developed quite well.

International Competition:
Sergei’s most memorable international appearance came during the 1999 Under 18 World Junior Championships. He played in all 7 games, recording a goal and an assist, earning a gold medal on the Russian National Team. Sergei was also on the 2000 Under 18 National Team, where, despite low production, he displayed his defensive talents, registering an impressive +12 +/- rating. Over the past 3 years Sergei has been a consistent member of the Russian National Team in one form or another. During the 2000-01 season, likely due to lack of ice time and the fact that his team played in the Upper League, Sergei played on Russia’s second National Team. He still performed very well at the Big Prize of St. Petersburg tournament, earning top honors with another one of his teammates, Alexander Frolov. In 01-02 season, Sergei saw his role increase with the National Team. He competed for Russia at every tournament was one of the team’s top forwards. He started U20 WJC on the team’s fourth line, but was moved to the third towards the end of the tournament. This was very important, since the team’s coach, Vladimir Plyuschev, used only three lines in the playoffs.
NHL Outlook:
The Colorado Avalanche drafted Sergei Soin with their 3rd pick in the 2nd round (50 overall). He was considered to be one of the fastest skaters and best raw talents in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. Colorado’s management hoped that he would develop into a speedy winger and so far their hopes have been justified. Though he still has not learned how to share the puck, Sergei has certainly developed into a speedy winger. The Colorado Avalanche traded Sergei Soin to the Nashville Predators and thought the Predators were unable to reach an agreement with the talented forward during the summer of 2003, he is likely to come over to North America during the summer of 2004. In the meantime the young forward will spend the 2003-04 season playing for the Super League's CSKA Moscow.
