03/22/2008 Quarterfinals - Metallurg Mg. vs. Dynamo 5:0 (series 3:2) – Metallurg rallies

Super League -  After being down 2-1 in the series, with a big-time performance Metallurg Magnitogorsk won the series with Dynamo Moscow with an impressive 5-0 victory, being able thus to win both decisive games they had to played so far. Still being without Czech forward Kudrna and young defender Rinat Ibragimov , the home team managed to beat Dynamo, who took part in this game without Vitaly Yachmenev (dislocated shoulder), Zabolotnev and others, plus having Fedor Fedorov (New York Rangers) and Troschinsky suffering injuries in the last two matches. Both teams as expected started goalkeepers Travis Scott and Vitaly Eremeev. Metallurg’s Canadian goalkeeper has now delivered 130 consecutive shut-out minutes.

The key of the game is the way Metallurg played in the first 15 minutes. First they pressured Dynamo in their own third with the third line and as a result they scored to get ahead with a scramble touch by Babenko. Then, at the fourteenth, after a good save by Scott on Fedor Fedorov (New York Rangers), the home team doubled the score as veteran Igor Korolev converted in with a soft backhander a rebound that came from a shot by Denis Platonov (Nashville Predators). Twenty seconds later a dart by Nikolai Kulemin (Toronto Maple Leafs) in the offensive zone brings Metallurg to the 3-0 lead. With a three goal advantage after the first twenty minutes the game was almost secured, but unfortunately a rough intervention by Giordano knocked out Vitaly Atyushov, and it’s still not clear the entity of his injury. The Canadian will be punished with a game misconduct.

After a rather quite second period, Metallurg stretches the advantage in the third period. After three minutes Bulin skates into the offensive zone and with a beautiful blue-line slapshot beats Eremeev in the top-right corner. Midway through the period young Anton Glovatsky skated past a defender helped by a great pick by Yuri Babenko , then with a really accurate wristshot has put the puck in Eremeev’s stick side for the 5-0 mark.

In the semifinals Metallurg Magnitogorsk will face Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, while regular season winners of Salavat Yulajev Ufa will challenge Ak Bars Kazan.
03/15/2008 Quarterfinals - Metallurg Mg. vs. Dynamo 2:4 (series 1:1) - Dynamo wins, but loses key players

Super League -  Metallurg Mg. vs. Dynamo 2:4 (series 1:1) – Dynamo Moscow rebounded from the first game loss to Metallurg with a victory in a tightly contested game that was not resolved until the last 5 minutes. Eric Landry scored Dynamo’s first two tallies early on before MEtallurg responded with goals from player coach Igor Korolev and Denis Platonov (Nashville Predators). Igor Mirnov (Ottawa Senators) had a great breakaway scoring chance, but failed to make it happen. Fedor Fedorov (New York Rangers) suffered a concussion in the last seconds of the game when his own defenseman hit him with the puck in the head when trying to clear it out of his zone…the NHL prospect was carried off the ice unconscious. He suffered a mild concussion as a result, but may return in the playoffs. Unfortunately, former NHLer Vitaly Yachmenev was not as luck as he dislocated his shoulder and it is unclear when he will be back. Dynamo’s goalie was also injured, though he ended up just suffering a muscle sprain and will be back in action shortly.
04/15/2007 Metallurg is Super League champion!

Russian Super League -  In a tightly contested back and forth series HC Metallurg finally wrestled the title away from 2006 champions HC Ak Bars. The Magnitogorsk club did so despite being without the services of star winger Denis Platonov (Nashville Predators), whose physical presence and strong overall play has been key to his club's success. The young Nashville Predators prospect was lost to a leg injury. READ MORE

Scouting Game Notes: Ak Bars (Kazan) vs. Dynamo (Moscow)
Talent Analysis:
Denis Platonov is a physical forward. He has a solid work ethic and give it all while he is on the ice. Platonov will crash the net, take on multiple opponents and fight hard for the puck. The hard working forward also has great endurance. In the 2002-03 Super League playoffs, when Ak Bars was knocked out in the first round by Lada Togliatti, Platonov and former NHLer Jan Benda were the only two players who remained active and aggressive the entire series, while the rest of the team trailed off hardly showed any life. He will log a lot of minutes and continue at 110% capacity. On the downside
Back In Russia:
Denis Platonov started his career in Saratov’s hockey school
NHL Outlook:
The Nashville Predators picked up Denis Platonov with their fourth pick, 75th overall in the third round of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. An imposing sized over-ager was a bit of a surprise, considering that he hadn’t played anywhere but his Russian team prior to being drafted. Platonov’s development thus far makes him look like a great choice for Nashville. He has proven to keep his work ethic at the highest level of hockey in Russia and continues to climb in the ranks. Denis Platonov would make a solid third line checking forward and first penalty kill unit member. He still needs another solid year in Russia’s Super League, but is approaching the jumping point to North America.
