Talent Analysis:
Rustam Sidikov is a good sized goalie, who covers the net well. He is sound positionally, though needs improve his rebound control. A hybrid goalie, Sidikov mostly plays up, but has a very quick butterfly. The young goaltender does not give up on a play and keeps with the play even when on the ice after a shot. Sidikov needs to improve his puckhandling skills outside the crease, as he currently doesn’t have strong stickhandling skills, which is a must for a goalie if he wants to make the first pass or just clear the puck out of the zone.
Back In Russia:
Rustam Sidikov spent has been raised in CSKA Moscow’s hockey system. In the past couple of years he has shared the ice time with another up and coming Russian goaltender, Sergei Borisov. The two are considered to be Russia’s best goaltenders born in’85. At one point, during the 2001-02 season, Borisov was considered to have a higher upside, but Sidikov has since then seemingly taken the lead in this two horse race. During the 2002-03 season, he was given the go ahead to be the starting goalie for Russia’s ’85 squad and to get more practice, was given more ice time with CSKA’s junior squad at the Finals tournament in Magnitogorsk. Prior to the start of the 2003-04 season, CSKA’s management signed Maxim Mikhailovsky to compete with the team’s current #1 goaltender for the ice time. There is unlikely to be much ice time left for the youngsters Borisov and Sidikov, who would have to make due with the club’s junior farm team.
NHL Outlook:
The Nashville Predators drafted Rustam Sidikov in the 4th round, 133rd overall. His drafting position was actually a bit higher then expected, as it seemed, that his average performance at certain points during the U18 WJC hurt his stock considerably, though, Nashville clearly did not think so. Sidikov will not likely see any ice time with Super League’s CSKA club this season. Also, it’s doubtful, that he will play on Russia’s U20 national squad, as Barulin and another ’84 goaltender will likely take over the two spots (Possibly Koshechkin). He will have to prove himself either with CSKA’s junior squad, or with an Upper League club, on loan from CSKA.
