09/09/2008 KHL Kicks Off: Detailed Recap of Ak Bars (Kazan) vs. Avangard (Omsk)

Continental Hockey League (KHL) -  The first KHL round has seen an interesting match in Kazan, where local Ak Bars challenged Jagr\'s Avangard Omsk. Avangard has been completely revamped during the summer as they had 21 new players in order to get by the disappointing 07-08 season, while Ak Bars kept the core of the team, being more concentrated in adding some quality imports to their rosters. The Kazan team had many not available players, a fact that allowed head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov to dress more youngsters than usual. 09/01/2008 Igor Mirnov (Ottawa Senators) breaks wrist in a preseason game

Continental Hockey League (KHL) -  Igor Mirnov (Ottawa Senators) broke his wrist during a preseason game of his HC Metallurg (Magnitogorsk) against HC Ak Bars. The young forward collided with Kazan's defenseman Andrei Pervyshin (St. Louis Blues) and fell awkwardly on his wrist. He will reportedly miss approximately two months of hockey and was already seen sporting a cast on his arm.
03/27/2008 Semifinals - Ak Bars Kazan vs. Salavat Yulayev 3:4 (series 1:2)

Super League -  Oleg Tverdovsky (Los Angeles Kings) scored two goals, with Alexei Shkotov (St. Louis Blues) and Igor Volkov (New York Islanders) adding a tally each to help Salavat Yulayev past HC Ak Bars and take the lead in the series. Robert Esche did not have his best game for Kazan, allowing a soft goal on Tverdovsky’s shot early on in the game and then failing to stop a couple of critical shots, including the one by Igor Volkov (New York Islanders), who skated past Andrei Pervyshin (St. Louis Blues) to the slot. Kazan once again depended too much on the top Danis Zaripov Sergei Zinovjev (Boston Bruins)Alexei Morozov (Pittsburgh Penguins) line and the team was unable to beat Ufa’s stacked lineup. If Salavat wins the next contest, it will advance to the finals for the first time in team history!

Talent Analysis:
Size & Physical Play: Pervyishin’s biggest downside is his size. He is slightly then 5’9 and weighs only 165 pounds. Some might point to another small sized defenseman who performed well in the past
Back In Russia:
Andrei Pervyishin has been raised in Yaroslavl Lokomotiv’s hockey school. He has also been a member of Russia’s ’85 team since it’s inception. During the beginning of 2002-03 season
NHL Outlook:
The St. Louis Blues selected Andrei Pervyishin with the 253 overall pick in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. He has consistently been a member of the national team and that will likely be the main arena where he will be able to showcase his talents. He has all the other tools, but unless he has some sort of a growth spurt, he will be undersized compared to his competition. Due to this shortcoming, he lost a lot of ground in the drafting order and was picked up in the latter middle or late rounds. However, St. Louis made a good pick in the latter rounds, as his stock is likely to continue to grow. He has immense talent and hockey sense.
