11/19/2007 Round 23: Pavel Vorobiev (Chicago Blackhawks) leads Spartak to rare victory

Super League -  HC Spartak earned a rare victory behind a determined effort from Pavel Vorobiev (Chicago Blackhawks), who scored his 7th and 8th goals of the season. Alexander Seluyanov (Detroit Red Wings) finally scored his first of the season, but it was Ivan Kasutin who earned the victory in the CSKA Ė Metallurg contest, helping his team beat last yearís champions. Young defenseman Yuri Alexandrov (Boston Bruins) potted two tallies after being quiet for the first quarter of the season. The young defenseman is U20 Team Russiaís captain and will lead the squad at the U20 WJC. READ MORE

09/15/2007 Round 1: Pavel Vorobiev (Chicago Blackhawks) delivers for Spartak

Super League -  Former Penguin Konstantin Koltsov (Pittsburgh Penguins) opened the season up with two goals, outshining some of the new HC Salavat Yulayev acquisition with an inspired performance. Sergei Gaiduchenko (Florida Panthers) impressed in his Super League debut despite his teamís loss. The talented young goaltender looked composed and ready against HC Khimik. The first day of action also marked the return of HC Spartak into the Super League. Despite losing the contest against HC MVD, Spartak was in the game for the first half and the game made it clear why Pavel Vorobiev (Chicago Blackhawks), with his two goals, continues to be a strong NHL prospect. Talent Analysis:
Pavel Vorobievís physical style of hockey fits very well in North America. Unfortunately he does not possess the bulk to be effective when playing physical hockey. He is very aggressive on the ice and constantly tries to pressure the opposition. Though Pavel is often unsuccessful in checking the bigger opponents, he never slows down and canít ever be faulted for lacking determination. Pavel is a talented skater. He is very quick, maneuverable and is always in motion. Pavel sees the ice very well. However, he needs to improve his reaction time when making plays. He is a very talented set up man, and while competing with players his age has shown creativity and precision in his passes. However, during the 01-02 season playoffs while he played for Yaroslavl, his passing was not as precise against more experienced professional veterans. Pavelís puck handling is above average, but needs more practice for him to effectively compete at the next level. He possessed great speed, but his puck handling shortcomings caused him problems while trying to carry the puck into the offensive zone during the 01-02 playoffs. Pavelís shot is above average, but he does not use it very often, preferring to either drive to the net or pass off the puck. Pavel is very responsible defensively and is often trusted in shorthanded situations at least in his own age group. He is a very hard worker and plays every shift with all heís got. Pavel is in great shape
Back In Russia:
2000-01: U20 WJC and Lokomotiv Yaroslavl
Originally from Kazakhstan, Pavel Vorobiev spent most of his career in Yaroslalv playing for then Torpedo, now Lokomotiv Yaroslavl. His break through season was the 2000-01 season, during which, at just 19, he was one of the leaders on the team. Pavel topped off the great season by being one of the best Russian forwards at the otherwise glum 2001 U20 World Junior Championships. There he was always a threat while on the ice. Pavelís most memorable performance of the tournament was in the battle for fifth place against Switzerland, where he assisted Stanislav Chistov twice with great passed. Unfortunately Russia still fell short, losing 3:2 and falling to seventh place. Towards the end of the 2000-01 season, Pavel suffered a knee injury and was operated on in Russia. Later that summer, Pavel attended Chicago for the teamís rookie camp, where the team doctors discovered a complication with Pavelís knee and had to operate on it again.

The reconstructive operation sidelined Pavel for almost the entire 2001-02 season and put his career under question. However, despite the concerns, he recovered well and returned to Yaroslavl with 11 games remaining in the season. He made an immediate impact, first centering the teamís fourth and then the third lines. Pavel showed signs of rust, making mistakes and seeming to have communication problems with his line mates, but he was in great shape physically and never slowed down, maintaining his upbeat tempo throughout each game. He played with young talented players like Artem Kryukov and Alexander Suglobov to create some unexpected offense from Lokomotivís lower lines. Unlike his regular season line mates, Pavel remained one of the teamís primary players in the playoffs, scoring 5 points (3g 2a) in the 13 games and helping his team to win the Russian Super League Championship.
NHL Outlook:
Pavel Vorobiev was 40th among the European players ranked in the CSS Mid-Term Report. At the end of the season, after a stellar performance in the Under 18 2000 World Championships (2 + 6 = 8pts.), Pavel was ranked 1st by CSB. Pavel Vorobievís solid overall game and his excellent work ethic make him a solid pick for the Chicago Blackhawks, who picked him with their 2nd pick (11th overall). It was a surprise that Pavel was still available, but Boston, Calgary and Tampa Bay made some interesting and unexpected selections. After Chicagoís hearts with the serious knee injury, Pavel appears to have fully recovered and returned to the form that made him one of the Russiaís most dominant players of the 2001-02 season. If Chicago successfully signs Pavel to a contract during the í02 summer, he will be in the mix for a spot in the Hawks main lineup for the 02-03 season. He could benefit from playing in Norfolk for a season, but it depends on how he performs in the training camp and if he needs that time to adjust to the North American game.
