03/15/2008 Quarterfinals - CSKA vs. Ak Bars 5:6 (Series 0:2) - Suglobov nets a hattrick

Super League -  CSKA vs. Ak Bars 5:6 (Series 0:2) - HC CSKA came back from a four goal deficit to tie the game 5:5, but failed to wrestle the victory away from Ak Bars, allowing a goal shorthanded with just over 5 minutes left in the game. Aleksander Suglobov (Toronto Maple Leafs) scored a hattrick and Denis Parshin (Colorado Avalanche) added another tally for CSKA. NHL prospect and one of the top blueliners in Russian hockey Grigory Panin stood out with his physical defensive style and a fight against the author of the hattrick Suglobov, whom he soundly defeated.

Talent Analysis:
Skating: An above average skater with an impressive top speed...good acceleration and agility...skates well backwards. Shot: possesses a slap shot with good accuracy but needs to improve its power...average shooting ability. Technical Ability: A slightly above average puckhandler...capable of carrying the puck up the ice. Passing: Capable of making a good pass, but needs to work on the precision Hockey Sense: Average hockey sense...sees the ice relatively well, but prone to making bad decisions, especially with the puck, if under pressure...Physical Play: not a physical player, despite the effort, and doesn’t stand up to physical pressure well...ability to play tough, physical hockey is especially important for a defenseman, and Panin fails to succeed in this category...he tries to make hits or stand up to the pressure, but doesn’t have the frame to be effective...prefers to use his stick instead of his body. Defensive Play: Above average in his own zone, but his average size hurts him, as well as his tendency to venture out of position.
Back In Russia:
Grigori Panin is the product of the Lada (Togliatti) hockey school. He made his Super League debut during the 2003-04 season, finally sticking with the club for good during the 2004-05 season. 2004-05 season: Panin was able to make an impact on the club out of training camp, and despite being an '85 born prospect, he was able to earn a full time spot in the Super League club’s lineup. Panin spent the majority of the season on the club’s third defensive pairing and showcased his ability to contribute offensively even in the defensively minded Petr Vorobiev’s hockey system. The young defenseman was also a member of the silver medal winning Russian national team, though it would be difficult to label his campaign with the national squad as a success. Panin experienced difficulties in adjusting to the smaller ice surface and keeping up with the faster, more physical North American style game. Still, his presence on the squad did him a lot of good and Panin gained a lot of value experience, and more importantly, was able to gain additional exposure in front of the scouts.
NHL Outlook:
Grigori Panin is eligible for the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. Panin is an offensively minded defenseman who does not stand out in any particular category, but does possess an interesting offensive upside. Considering his achievements in the Super League, he can potentially develop into a reliable utility blue liner who could step in case of injury.
