Continental Hockey League (KHL) -  As announced today, Dynamo Moscow signed a 2-yr deal with former Lada and Salavat Yulaev defenseman Dmitri Vorobiev (Toronto Maple Leafs). The 23 years old player was reported to be in talk with some NHL clubs, probably with his Leafs too, but for some reasons he couldn't find a common language with the North American teams and thus ended up in Dynamo Moscow, who will feature a very competitive team for the 2009-10 KHL season. Let's remember that Vorobiev had to sit down from hockey for several months after the doctors found a heart problem with him and was just recently cleared to play. READ MORE

Draft Rankings and Comments:
Rank 2: #10
Rank 3: #6
Rank 4: #7
Talent Analysis:
Skating: A technical skater with a good average top speed...above average acceleration, and at times uses a surprising burst of speed in the defensive zone...skates well backwards. Shot: Needs to work on the strength of his slap shot, but it is fairly precise... doesn’t shoot the puck often. Technical Skills: An average puck handler with fairly soft hands...handles the puck responsibly in his own zone and isn’t afraid to bring it up the ice. Pass: Sees the ice well and knows where to make the pass out of the zone to, but needs to work on his long range precision...can make a nice pass in the offensive zone. Hockey Sense: Has a very mature hockey sense, seeing the ice very well...positionally sound in the defensive zone, rarely screening the goalie and reading the opponents well...very calm, not making any jittery times does tend to overplay the puck in his own zone. Defensive Play: Defensive play is his biggest upside...very solid positioning in his own zone...reads the attacks well...trusted in short handed situations...good size, but not yet strong enough to be effective physically, relying on tying up, rather than checking an opponent. Physical Play: Possesses a solid frame, standing at 6’2 and 195 pounds, but has not yet developed adequate strength...capable of checking, but needs to boost his level of aggressiveness on the ice...fights along the boards, but again, relies more on his size to tie up an opponent, rather than overpower him...hardly ever delivers open ice checks.
Back In Russia:
2008 Update: Dmitri Vorobiev is a talented product of the HC Lada hockey system. The young defensive prospect has consistently been a member of Russia’s U18 and U20 national squads and has also skated on several occasions , including at the 2008 World Championships in Canada. The young defenseman was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs with the 157th overall selection in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. He has since become one of the top blue liners in the Russian Super League and on Russia’s national team.
Raised in Lada Togliatti’s hockey school system...2002-03 season notes: emerged during the 2002-03 season as one of the best blue liners in the Super League club’s pipeline, becoming the top defenseman on Lada’s farm team after Buffalo Sabres prospect Denis Ezhov...2003-04 season notes: Spent the 2003-04 preseason on Lada’s main roster, skating on the club’s third defensive pairing...started the regular season practicing with Lada Togliatti, but not skating on the club’s roster during games...earned some ice time on the top defensive pairing in a couple of games, before being put back in the reserve...will likely see ice time again during the regular season.

NHL Outlook:
Pre-Draft Assessment: Dmitri Vorobiev is emerging as one of the top defensive prospects coming out of Russia after Anton Belov and Kiril Lyamin. He has the size, hockey sense and poise to develop into a regular defensive defenseman in the NHL. The young blue liner is solid in his own zone, but his offensive upside is limited due to his style of play and average shot. Already a very mature young blue liner, Vorobiev has a lot of potential and will likely continue developing in front of everybody’s eyes throughout the 2003-04 season. His stock may further increase if he manages to retain his spot on Russia’s national team for the U20 WJC, and earn some additional ice time in the Super League. Exposure: Will likely make Russia’s U20 squad a year early and will also see ice time in Russia’s Super League, as he is one of the favorites of Lada’s management and head coach Vorobiev.
RP pre-draft Projection: mid third or fourth round.
