Talent Analysis:
(Headshot photo used with permission from CSKA Moscow hockey club's press deptment.)
Skating: Smooth skater with above average acceleration...at one point struggled with skating, but the private training sessions and lessons have clearly worked wonders for the young defenseman...skates well backwards Shot: Possesses a very strong shot, but hardly ever uses it...needs to shoot the puck more...never uses the wrist shot, preferring the slap shot from the blue line....hard to elaborate much more beyond the strength of the shot, as he uses it so rarely. Technical Ability: A very good stick handler with a great reach...Solid puck handler, capable of carrying the puck up the ice...needs to further improve on his puck handling in pressure situations Pass: Can make a precise first pass out of the zone...his overall passing is precise and he usually selects the option that creates the best scoring chance. Hockey Sense: Understands how the plays develop exceptionally well...defensively, anticipates situations, rather th
Back In Russia:
Kiril Lyamin is a product of CSKA Moscow’s hockey school. During the 2002-03 season, he was one of the top defensemen on CSKA’s ’86 squad, skating on the top defensive pairing. During the summer of 2003, he made quite an impact in the Super League preseason, earning a spot on CSKA’s competitive blue line. Known to be a favorite of the legendary Viktor Tikhonov, Lyamin started the season on CSKA’s top defensive pairing with Alexander Zhurik, becoming one of the youngest players in the Super League. He was slowly moved back to the third pairing, continuing to log 10-15 minutes a game in the Super League. Curiously, over the past two seasons, Lyamin has never received an invitation to join Russia’s '86 or U18 squads. This may have been a good thing for the defenseman late this summer, as it allowed him to cement a spot in the Super League instead of competing against his peers. He has also received an invitation to join Russia’s U20 squad for the November’s tournament, the last preparatory tournament prior to the U20 World Junior Championships.

2004 U18 WJC (April 2004) (Grade: A-): Kiril Lyamin finally made his debut on Russia’s U18 national squad. Lyamin delivered a solid performance, and as expected by many experts, he was Russia’s top blue liner. The young defenseman was reliable in his own zone and his primarily responsibility was defensive, but he also actively contributed on offense. He not only shot the puck from the blue line, but also showed how well he saw the ice, making some interesting combinations and did not hesitate to skate into the opponent’s zone. Lyamin scored his only goal of the tournament when it really mattered, tying the final game against the Americans. Malkin fed him a nice pass; he then took the puck, and put a precise wrist shot right above the goalie’s shoulder. Lyamin, Malkin and Parshin interacted well and put together some creative scoring chances.

NHL Outlook:
Lyamin has a wealth of potential. He is a skilled, mature defensive defenseman with a large frame and great reach. Lyamin is already competing at the highest level of hockey in Russia and his NHL upside lies on the top defensive pairing. The young blueliner's stock has been raised significantly by his Super League play. Now he has to break into the ranks of Russia’s U18 and U20 squads for some high level international exposure.
