11/25/2008 Roman Voloshenko (Minnesota Wild) traded to HC Tver for a goalie

Continental Hockey League (KHL) -  Roman Voloshenko (Minnesota Wild) was traded today by HC Dynamo to HC Tver for goalie Mikhail Biryukov . Biryukov had a strong season last year, but struggled to meet the same expectations and deliver a stable performance this year around. Roman Voloshenko (Minnesota Wild) has not stood out much either and has also struggled to find himself since returning from North America. For Voloshenko this could be a fresh start, while for Biryukov this is a demotion back to the backup job.

Talent Analysis:
(Headshot photo used with permission from Soviet Wings hockey club's press deptment.)
Skating: Skating is a significant weakness...does not skate well backwards, and gets beaten on rushes...has average straight away acceleration...can maneuver, but is not sturdy on his skates...needs to improve his overall skating, including the stride and top speed. Shot: Voloshenko’s shot is his biggest strength...has a strong, precise wrist shot with a good release...also uses his slap shot, but not as often...shoots a lot at the junior squad level, but needs to shoot more while he plays with his club in Russia’s secondary Upper League. Technical Ability: Doesn’t have really good hands...has average puckhandling skills, and can’t really carry the puck up the ice...usually one of his linemates will carry it up the ice and then pass it to him Pass: A typical finisher and very rarely passes the puck...gets in position in the perimeter and waits for the feed to take the shot. Hockey Sense: Hasn’t yet developed a good hockey sense...doesn’t really make things happen, and keeps it fairly simple by staying around the perimeter, waiting to use his shot on a feed from one his linemates. Defensive Play: Good in his own zone...possesses a solid work ethic...good positioning...plays physical hockey...some defensive lapses, especially on a quick turnover can be traced back to his skating problems, as he can’t get back into the zone on time to help out. Physical Play: Likes to play physical hockey...fights hard in the corners...very effective at the junior level, but still needs to bulk up to be a force against adult players in the Upper League.
Back In Russia:
Roman Voloshenko is a product of the Soviet Wings hockey system. Became a member of the Team Russia ’86 during the 2002-03 season. The young forward also made his Super League debut towards the end of the same season, when the cash-strapped Soviet Wings had no hope of keeping their spot in the Super League. A typical goal scorer, Voloshenko has consistently ended up being Russia’s third or fourth scorer at most tournaments, establishing himself as a full fledged member of Russia’s ’86 squad. Unfortunately, Voloshenko did start the 2003-04 season slow, with a mediocre showing at the 2003 Junior World Cup. Please refer to the tournament review(s) below regarding Roman Voloshenko’s performance at each tournament.

2003 World Cup (August '03) Grade: 7.0/10: During the first tournament of the 2003-04 season Voloshenko skated on Russia’s second line, which was Radulov

NHL Outlook:
Roman Voloshenko’s NHL appeal lies in his great offensive upside, including a great shot, as well as his work ethic in the defensive zone. The young forward needs to improve on his skating and to further develop his hockey sense in order to boost his upside. He spent the 2003-04 season playing against adult players in the Russian secondary Upper League for the Soviet Wings and filled in an impact role on the squad towards the end of the season and in the playoffs. Towards the end of the season he has also overtaken Mikhail Yunkov in the draft rankings. The young forward’s stock has also skyrocketed after his strong performances at April’s 2004 U18 WJC and February’s U18 Five Nations Tournament. Reflecting the track of last year's Islanders pick Dmitri Chernykh, Voloshenko may be slated by some services to be picked in the first round, but will likely end up being selected mid second round.
RP Draft Projection: second round
