Talent Analysis:
2001-02 Update:
Alexander Barkunov came over to North America for the Black Hawks mini rookie camp an inch taller and 10 pounds heavier then the previous year. He played very well in the prospect game and was on the Hawk""s best defenseman. Back in Russia, Alexander struggled to crack the lineup of the significantly improved Lokomotiv roster. He managed to finally make towards the midseason and spent 13 games with the team. Alexander was then loaned to Amur Khabarovsk for the remainder of the season. There he played 6 games thus far this season.

Alexander Barkunov is a mobile puck carrying defenseman. He is a solid skater with good mobility he also fights very well for the puck next to the boards. At 6'2 and 207 pounds, Alexander has a solid NHL size. Alexander also possesses strong offensive skills. He meticulously practices his slap shot and is a solid passer with good hockey sense. A lot of his offense minded tendencies evolved because Alexander started his career is Siberia playing in a forward position and was then moved back on defense. One of the biggest negative aspects of Alexander""s game is his lack of physical presence on the ice. He prefers to tie up opponents against the boards instead of hitting them. He will have to become physical to continue his development. One of Alexander""s biggest weapons is his calmness and cold bloodedness. He is very difficult to provoke and never loses his cool, in turn provoking his opponents to take the bad penalties.
Back In Russia:
2002-03 Season Review: Looking back at it now, it may have been very foolish for Barkunov not to sign to the contract he was reportedly offered by the Blackhawks. He spent the season with Super League
NHL Outlook:
Alexander Barkunov was picked by the Chicago Blackhawks with their 7th pick, 151st overall in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. He was a great find for Chicago as Alexander was largely unknown to the NHL scouts. The only reason Chicago found out about his was because they employed Lokomotiv""s and Russian Junior National Team""s coach, Petr Vorobiev as an independent consultant. The team""s management was very pleased at Barkunov""s performance at the 2001 U20 WJC and said they looked forward to seeing Alexander at the 2001 Training Camp. The club unsuccessfully tried to sign the young defender during the summers of 2001 and 2002. The did not give it another try during the summer of 2004 and Alexander will have to have a far more successful 2003-04 season to merit another offer in 2004.
