2005 NHL ENTRY DRAFT
Rank 1: #21
Rank 2: #21
Rank 3: #18 Ranking Comments:Sees regular duty with Metallurg in the Super League and is taking advantage of the opportunity. We like this forward's raw skills that he is starting to put together into quite an impressive package. Makarov will also likely skate on Russia's '85 national squad.
Rank 4: #23
Talent Analysis:
Skating: Makarov is a strong skater with a good top speed...average first step and acceleration. Shot: Possesses a very dangerous wrist shot...it is strong and precise, but he needs to improve the speed of the release...doesn’t use his slap shot often...doesn’t have a very good backhand shot. Technical Skills: Average puck handler, but is very tough and hard to knock off the puck...not very creative with the puck...hands seem a bit stiff. Pass: Not a pure sniper, and shares the puck with his line mates...his passes are usually well placed. Hockey Sense: Doesn’t see the ice that well... at times tends to be a bit hesitant in the offensive zone...what he does see, he takes advantage off using his strength and skills, but isn’t very creative, so misses some prime scoring chances. Defensive Play: Isn’t a defensive liability...average in his own zone. Physical Play: Very strong physically...a tough player to compete against next to the boards...hard to knock off the puck...uses his body well in the defensive zone. Intangibles: A player with a good base of skills and size, but just hasn’t put it together quite yet. Benefited greatly from playing on the first line with Evgenii Malkin for Metallurg Magnitagorsk’s ’86 squad.
Back In Russia:
Raised in the Salavat Yulayev’s farm system...signed with Metallurg Magnitagorsk during the summer of 2001. 2002-03 Season Notes: Spent the season on Metallurg’s junior and ’86 DOB farm teams...performed very well at the final phase of the competition between the ’86 squads of Russian Super League clubs, where he skated on the same line with Evgenii Malkin...2003-04 Season Notes: Spent the preseason with Metallurg’s main team, but was unable to beat out Malkin and Pestunov for the junior spots on the senior team (a team is required to hold four players under the age of 20 on their rosters)..started the regular season on Metallurg’s junior squad, Metallurg 2.

NHL Outlook:
Konstantin Makarov has a solid array of skills on a very sturdy frame, though he hasn’t put all the pieces together yet, underachieving at the U18 WJC, and not making Metallurg’s roster during the 2003-04 preseason. Unfortunately, it appears that Makarov’s stock is currently at it’s highest point and will not likely increase. He is no longer eligible for the Russian U18 squad, and will not likely receive an invitation to compete on the U20 national team. Barring him making Metallurg Magnitagorsk’s roster, which is quite unlikely, since Pestunov and Malkin appear to have a firm grasp on those two remaining roster spots.
RP Draft Projection: sixth to seventh round.
