05/31/2009 Mikhail Yunkov on his way to Washington

National Hockey League (NHL) -  It looks like Mikhail Yunkov (Washington Capitals) might travel to North America for the 09-10 season, after he stated to Soviet Sports magazine that "the contract with Spartak Moscow is expired now and I decided to test myself in the NHL. I'm going to attend the development camp. I know well that it will be hard for me. Most likely I'll spend there the whole season, even if they will demote me to the AHL." The 23 years old center had a strong 08-09 campaign with Spartak, almost doubling his points production, passing from 10 to 18 points.

09/10/2008 Mikhail Yunkov (Washington Capitals): It's all because of my brother

Continental Hockey League (KHL) -  An article hit the press that Spartak forward Mikhail Yunkov (Washington Capitals) will spend the next season with the Washington Capitals. However, the player himself was not aware of this. I also read about this on the internet. But I don't know anything about this. I did not receive any offers. It's unclear to me where this information surfaced from. (Sport Day By Day Interview by Dinara Kafiskina) READ MORE

Talent Analysis:
(Headshot photo used with permission from Soviet Wings hockey club's press deptment.)
Skating: A mobile skater with an above average top speed and good agility...possesses good acceleration, and is able to reach top speed quickly...skates well backwards, and is able to effectively shadow opponents in the defensive zone. Shot: Possesses a very good, precise wrist shot with a quick release...doesn’t use the slap shot often...hesitates to shoot in general, instead looking to set up a line mate...needs to shoot the puck more often. Technical Ability: Good stick handler with soft hands, able to knock the puck away from an opponent in the defensive zone...possesses above average puck handling skills...able to carry the puck into the offensive zone at very good speed. Pass: Makes passes with good precision...makes the passes easy for his linemates to handle. Hockey Sense: A very creative playmaker in the offensive zone...reads situations well and makes decisions quickly...creates great chances for his line mates with precise passes...often his production suffers because of his linemates' inability to read situations as well. Defensive Play: A capable two way forward, who is very responsible in his own end of the ice...doesn’t hesitate to block shots...usually trails his fellow forwards out of the neutral zone and is the first to get back on defense...very good defensive stick handling. Physical Play: Moves well through traffic, but at only 174 pounds, he has ways to physically develop before he can fill in his 6’0 frame...displays effective physical play against his peers, but not yet at the adult level...competes well at the boards, but his effectiveness is hurt by his lack of mass and he compensates for this disadvantage with his stick handling...needs to further improve his aggressiveness. Face offs: Because of the lack of mass, he takes face-offs using a very interesting style...gets the pressure of his entire body down on the stick under a fairly extreme angle relative to the ice, maximizing the tension on the tip of his stick in the face-off circle before the puck is dropped.
Back In Russia:
Mikhail Yunkov started his career in the CSKA Moscow system, but at 14 moved to the the Soviet Wings hockey system. Became a member of the Team Russia ’86 during the 2002-03 season. He first fulfilled the "work horse" role on the national team, skating on the checking line and in short handed situations. After the first tournament of the 2003-04 season, his role has become somewhat more prominent. Please refer to the tournament review(s) below regarding Mikhail Yunkov’s performance at each tournament.

2003 World Cup (August '03) Grade: 8.0/10: During the first tournament of the 2003-04 season he was given more responsibility, centering Russia’s second line, which was Radulov

NHL Outlook:
Mikhail Yunkov has the potential to become a good two way forward. He is not flashy, and does not possess great physical characteristics, but the young forward has a very good work ethic and has the upside of becoming a second or third line center in the NHL. Yunkov’s stock increased significantly after a successful preseason with his Russian Club, Soviet Wings, and his good performance at the U18 World Cup, held in August, 2003.
