2004 NHL ENTRY DRAFT
Rank 2: #35
Rank 3: #21
Rank 4: #21
Talent Analysis:
Skating: Improved in this category over the course of the season...used to be just average, but has now moved above this level...maneuverable, but doesn’t possess a really high top speed, instead relying on his puckhandling. Shot: Has an above-average wrist shot. Technical Ability: Good hands...uses his effective puckhandling and speed to control the puck anywhere on the ice. Passing: Capable of making some very nice feeds...used to pass a lot less, however, his stint in the Upper League has helped him to become a less selfish player and, consequently, also rounded out his offensive game. Hockey Sense: Ogorodnikov is an interesting center, as he is creative and can make unique, unexpected decisions. Defensive Play: Responsible defensively, coming back to his own zone, although he isn’t effective at digging the puck out along the boards or in the corners...plays well positionally in his own zone and can poke check the puck away. Physical Ability: Standing at 5’11 and just shy of 170 pounds, Ogorodnikov doesn’t have a very imposing frame and often appears to be physically outclassed...needs to become stronger...doesn’t play physical hockey and shies away from physical contact. Overall: A creative center with very good hands and hockey sense, but who is also soft and lacks top-end speed.
Back In Russia:
2003-04 season: Currently in Dynamo Moscow club’s system. Spent most of the 2003-04 season on loan with an Upper League club, THK Tver. Picked up his play towards the end of the season when THK lost a lot of the club’s veterans and looked to him for scoring. 2002-03 season: Spent the season with Dynamo Moscow’s junior farm clubs, Dynamo 2 and Dynamo ’86, where he centered the second line with Alexander Radulov and Genadi Stolyarov on his wings.
NHL Outlook:
Sergei Ogorodnikov is eligible for the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. Given his talent and hockey sense, the young forward has been highly touted by some scouting agencies, however, his soft style of play and small size are both areas of concern. In addition, his inability to earn a spot on Russia’s U18 squad all season has really hurt his exposure to the scouts.
