10/02/2010 Blues' Nikita Nikitin (St. Louis Blues) suffers broken wrist

National Hockey League (NHL) -  Baseball has an adage that warns "you can never have enough pitching." The hockey version of that involves defensemen. The Blues discovered Friday that defenseman Nikita Nikitin (St. Louis Blues) had suffered a broken right wrist, an injury that will sideline him a minimum of four weeks. The 24-year-old Russian defender fell on the wrist during the Blues' 4-1 victory over Chicago on Thursday night. However, he continued to play, unaware of the extent of the damage. An MRI revealed the break Friday morning. (StlToday article by Dan O'Neill) READ MORE
09/17/2010 Nikita Nikitin (St. Louis Blues) 'Russian' his way onto Blues roster?

National Hockey League (NHL) -  The roster is fairly set, with the exception of the last two defensive spots. I think they’ll go to Tyson Strachan and Alex Pietrangelo. It wouldn’t be a complete surprise, though, if Ian Cole played well enough to earn one. He’s got the tools. To me, the guy to watch is Russian defenseman Nikita Nikitin (St. Louis Blues). He’s 24 and has been solid in the KHL, but this is his first crack at the NHL. It’ll take time to adjust to the style, but he’s got the size (6-3, 215) and the experience. At the very least, keep an eye on Nikitin. (stltoday.com article by Roger Hensley) READ MORE
06/14/2010 Nikita Nikitn signs with St. Louis Blues

Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) -  The Blues finally reached an agreement with Nikita Nikitin (St. Louis Blues). The 24 years old blue liner will most likely start the season in the AHL after the training camp. Nikitin had some successful seasons in the KHL under his belt and his experience will be certainly useful for the Blues. He is a good two-way defenseman with a good frame and solid defensive abilities. READ MORE

Draft Rankings and Comments:
2004 NHL ENTRY DRAFT
Rank 2: #43
Rank 3: #44
Rank 4: #32
Talent Analysis:
Skating: A technical skater with surprisingly good straightaway speed for someone his size...average skater backwards...has a good first step and maneuverability. Shot: Strong slap shot with good control: he can raise the puck off the ice, or leave it on the ice level for a redirect. Technical Skills: Capable of handling the puck, but still makes mistakes under pressure...carries the puck well up ice, but often makes outlet passes...stickhandles very well. Pass: Makes precise passes, which are a bit hard at times...can make very good outlet passes out of the defensive zone...does not get involved on the offensive end of the ice. Hockey Sense: Still very raw and does not see the ice all that well...tends to get carried away by plays and gets out of position...needs to be more responsible in his own zone and make safer decisions. Defensive Play: Can be solid one moment, and make a critical error the next...does not yet fully understand the flow of the game in his own zone, but is learning quickly...needs to improve his positional game...needs to take advantage of his reach and better tie up his opponents’ sticks. Physical Game: Needs to bulk up, since he is 6’3, but weights only 170 pounds...does attempt to play physical hockey, working especially hard at the boards, but does relatively little damage with him 170 pound frame...has trouble handling bigger forwards in front of the net, and needs to do a better job tying them up with his impressive reach. Overall: Nikita Nikitin is a solid sized defenseman who is a very good skater and has an impressive arsenal of skills. However, he is still very raw and besides needing to bulk up, Nikitin needs to understand the game better and make better decisions. He reminds of Ivan Koltsov (Edmonton Oilers) from a couple of seasons ago, who also had the speed, skills and height, but not the "girth" or the hockey sense when Edmonton picked him up in the fourth round. However, Koltsov was more polished and was one of the top defensemen on Russia’s U18 squad.
Back In Russia:
Nikita Niktin was born in Omsk, Russia and has spent his junior career skating in HC Avangard (Omsk) hockey system. The young defenseman was a regular on Russia’s U18 and U20 national squads. The young defenseman was drafted by the St. Louis Blues with the 136th overall selection in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. He has spent several seasons skating in the professional Russian Super League with HC Avangard Omsk and established himself as a strong Super League caliber defenseman.
NHL Outlook:
136th overall selection by the St. Louis Blues in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft
