| Artem Vostrikov (Columbus Blue Jackets) leaves Soviet Wings for RSL's HC MVD
After two seasons with the High League’s (Russia 2) Soviet Wings, Artem Vostrikov (Columbus Blue Jackets) is returning to the RSL. Unable to help lead the cash strapped club back to the Super League (Russia 1), the young forward chose not to resign with the Soviet Wings and instead saw an opportunity to try his ability in the Super League (Russia 1) with the HC MVD, a club that earned the promotion to the RSL this past summer. The ’83 born Vostrikov lead the Soviet Wings in scoring during the 2003-04 season, but was hampered by an early season injury and couldn’t recover back to the same form.
The Super League club also signed former Colorado Avalanche prospect Yuri Babenko and is reportedly pursuing the Butsayev brothers (Yuri and Slava), who are both former NHL players.

| Talent Analysis: |
| Skating: A smooth skater with a good stride...above average acceleration...average
first step. Shot: Possesses an average shot, which he does not
use often...needs to shoot more often...tends to overhandle the puck instead of
distributing it earlier in the play. Technical Skills: Has soft
hands and above average puck control...uses his body well to shield the puck.
Pass: Can make a nice pass, but is not consistent...needs to
work on precision. Hockey Sense: Average hockey sense...needs
to work on his response time...needs to work on his decision making, something
the coaches will sure make him understand or have him sit on the bench....tends
to attempt end to end rushes with the puck without using his linemates, which
sometimes results in a nice goal, but most of the time results in a giveaway and
knocks him out of the play...sees his linemates, but often attempts to make very
low probability plays, passing to linemates, who are not open. Defensive
Play: Responsible defensively...blocks shots...skates well backwards...good
posititionally in the defensive zone. Physical Play: A sturdy
skater and is hard to knock down...seems to have a bit of a problem keeping the
same intensity level for an entire game. |
| Back In Russia: |
| Born and raised in Togliatti, Artem Vostrikov is the product of Lada Togliatti’s
hockey school. 2001-02 season: The young forward progressed through
Lada’s farm system, getting his first serious look with the Super League
club during the summer of 2001. Vostrikov performed well during the preseason,
and started the regular season with the Super League club. However, after a couple
of months, Lada loaned the talented forward to the Upper League’s CSK VVS,
where he could get more ice time and further along his developement. 2002-03
season: During the summer of 2002, Vostrikov was back with Lada Togliatti,
but did not start the regular season with the club, this time being loaned to
a fellow Super League club, Spartak Moscow. While on the surface this seemed to
guaranty the young center a spot in the Super League, he joined a struggling organization
with significant financial difficulties. Vostrikov could not make an impact on
his new club, spending the majority of the season either on the bench or skating
on Spartak’s fourth line. 2003-04 season: After the 2002-03
season, Vostrikov’s relationship with Lada has concluded, and the young
center became a free agent. During the summer of 2003 he signed with the Upper
League’s Soviet Wings, skating with his new club throughout the preseason.
For the first time in his professional career, Vostrikov found a place where he
has been given an impact role. With the Soviet Wings, he has been skating on the
top two lines and in key situations. The young forward responded well to the challenge,
enjoying the best season of his short career. |
| NHL Outlook: |
| Artem Vostrikov was drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 6th round (187th overall) in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. The young forward has good speed, defensive ability, hands and size, but needs to continue to improve his understanding of the game, and his conditioning. This season has clearly given the young forward confidence and the chance to skate in key situations. The next logical step would be for him to catch with a Super League club during the 2004-05 season and continue to further his developement. While Vostrikov consistently skating on the first or second line of an NHL club could be a stretch, he could develop into a checking line, or fourth line center, who would occasionally get ice time in the top couple of lines, filling in for injured players. If he continues on the current track, he could skate on the young Columbus squad in a couple of seasons. |
