04/23/2004 Vladislav Luchkin (Chicago Blackhawks) leads Molot Prikamye back into the Super League
Talent Analysis:
Vladislav Luchkin is a work in progress. He is a decent skater, and can move swiftly across the ice. However, everything about his game seems a bit rough and lacking experience. Though, he looks ahead and tries to judge the situation, Vlad does not seem to have the confidence in his game. He seems a bit hesitant when he’s got the puck and can be knocked off it without too much effort. Vlad’s puck handling is average and when in traffic, he often tends to look down at it instead of looking for his teammates. He tries to play team hockey, and can make a solid pass to one of his teammates. However, for a player touted as a playmaker in his own age group, Vlad doesn’t read the situations too well at the Super League level. He does play well without the puck and finds good, open scoring positions. Vlad can also mix it up a bit on occasion and play physical hockey. He is not a big guy, but puts up a fight along the boards.

Defensively, Vladislav tends to float a bit. He is usually sound positionally, but tends to use his stick more then his body against the opposition. He is not a great stick handler either, so, on occasion, this tendency has gotten him in trouble when he overcommitted on the puck and let the opponent skate right by him. So, overall, Vlad is still a work in progress at best. On the upside his play is coming together and his great skating is definitely helping him stick around in the Super League. On the down side, he is caught in a loop of sorts
Back In Russia:
Vladislav is a product of the Severstal Cherpovets hockey system and continues to develop with the team. 98-00: Cherpovets have been patiend with Vlad, bringin him up slowly through their system. During the 1999-00 season he seemed to begin to dominate at the First League, junior level of hockey and was promoted to the Super League squad. 00-01: During his first year in the Super Leauge, Vlad saw little action, playing primarily on the fourth line or being a healthy scratch for most of the season. However, he was never sent down to the minors. 01-02: During the 2001-02 season, Vladislav continued to play on Severstal’s fourth line. He played most of the season with Calgary Flames’ prospect Yuri Trubachev and a Russian league veteran Dmitri Denisov. Yuri is also considered a natural center, but Vlad usually took over center duties on the fourth line, with Yuri Trubachev moving to left wing. Vladislav’s production increased from the previous season, as did his ice time. He usually received around 7-10 minutes of ice time per game. 2002-03: Vladislav Luchkin was unable to follow up an impressive 2001-02 season with a solid 2002-03. He started the year with Severstal Cherpovets, but turning 20 meant that he could no longer satisfy the league’s junior player requirement and the arrival of youngster Yevgeniy Issakov (who was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins this summer) from Tyumen effectively knocked Luchkin out of the lineup. After playing a few minutes a game early on for Severstal, the Cherpovets club loaned the forward to SKA St. Petersburg, where the club, surging with Mikhailov at the helm, found space for the youngster in only two games. 2003-04 Outlook: Thinks are not looking great for Luchkin with Severstal. He will have to move on to a different, less wealthy and deep Super League club to find any ice time.
NHL Outlook:
The Chicago Blackhawks drafted Vlad with their seventh pick, 225th overall in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. At the time he was touted as a playmaking center with great skating ability. His move up to the Super League has not been easy, but it appears that Vlad is finally establishing himself at the higher level of hockey. Vladislav is far from being considered a solid prospect because it is very difficult to assess the abilities of a player who seems to lack confidence in himself. It’s hard to tell whether his suspect puckhandling and decision making is because of a lack of confidence or lack of a hockey sense. During the 02-03 season, Vlad will likely receive more ice time with Sevestal and will hopefully present a more clear look of his abilities. Vlad is still a prospect and it should be placed into consideration that it has only been only two years since the draft and Vlad is playing in the very competitive Super League against well paid veterans.
