03/31/2007 Semifinals - 2: Ivan Kasutin gets surprising start

Russian Super League -  Goalie Ivan Kasutin got the surprising start for HC CSKA against Ak Bars. The young netminder fared relatively well, though still taking the 4:2 loss. Denis Platonov (Nashville Predators) continued to deliver in the playoffs for HC Metallurg, scoring his 19th of the season. Former Edmonton Oilers prospect Alexander Fomichev got the nod to start for HC Avangard, and the goalie took advantage of the opportunity to make an impact and deliver a victory for his club. Draft Rankings and Comments:
2005 NHL ENTRY DRAFT
Rank 1: #1
Rank 2: #1
Rank 3: #1 Ranking Comments:While still the best goalie out of Russia eligible for the '04 draft, Kasutin is getting no ice time, as the club's top goalie has been playing in all the games for the club's junior affiliate while recovering from an injury.
Rank 4: #1
2006 NHL ENTRY DRAFT
Rank 2: #32
Rank 3: #15 Ranking Comments:Finally, the experts are recognizing what we have been saying for more than a year: Ivan Kasutin is the real thing and is one of the most skilled goaltenders to come out of Russia in a long time. Kasutin made a great professional debut in the High League (Russia 2), skating for HC Dizel in Penza. He led the club to a successful playoff run and was third goalie for Russia's squad at the U20 WJC. Despite his unsuccessful 20 minutes in a friendly game at the WJC that cost him the back up spot, given more of a chance Kasutin could have performed well for Team Russia even as the squad's starter. Coming from the Finnish school of goaltending, Kasutin is technically sound. He is also strong mentally and is very confident and calm in his abilities. If the young netminder continues to advance at the same pace as he is now, he will become one of the premier Russian goalies within a handful of years.
2007 NHL ENTRY DRAFT
Rank 1: #15
Rank 2: #16
Rank 3: #13
Talent Analysis:
Scout 1: Butterfly style goalie...best out of all Russian goalies down low...at times spends too much time in the butterfly, but is very comfortable at doing it...moves very well on the pads...recently switched to the Bauer Vapors and seems to have adapted well to the new pads...learned the butterfly style at a goaltending camp in Finland that he has attended for several years in a row...does not stay in the net and skates out to challenge opponents...plays angles well...a very good skater...does not hesitate to get out of the net to play the puck...good stick control and can effectively clear the puck out of the zone...stick handling is very strong when compared to other Russian goalies...needs to play more stand up style than butterfly style.
Scout 2: Very well trained technically as a goaltender... plays modern style of hockey...young, and accordingly not very consistent...a very good skater...a very good reaction, including a quick glove...very stable psychologically and possesses a lot of confidence...works very hard during practices and by himself...applies himself...needs to get in better physical shape
Back In Russia:
Born in Russian city of Vologograd, Ivan Kasutin started playing hockey in 1996 at the age of 10. A year later he enrolled in Severstal’s hockey school in Cherpovets, where he enjoyed enough success to be noticed by Lokomotiv (Yaroslavl)’s junior coaching staff
NHL Outlook:
Still the best among the ’85 and ’86 born Russian goaltenders, Kasutin’s NHL draft stock has declined since he was the national team started a couple of years back. Due to his achievements, Anton Khudobin may by some be considered to be a superior talent to Kasutin, but that is not the case, as the latter goaltender is more talented technically and will have a longer, and brighter career. Considering his overall talent and his contemporary style of play learned in Finland, Kasutin would be well worth a consideration for the NHL scouts. Still, to continue his development, Kasutin needs ice time and proper guidance, which means that he needs a change of scenery and either take over the starting spot on one of the High League or bottom Super League squads, or move on the juniors in North America. Unless a miracle occurs, the political climate on Russia’s junior national team will likely lead to Khudobin retaining the starting job, so this aspect should not hold Kasutin put in Russia and prevent him from coming overseas.
RussianProspects Draft Projection: Sixth Round.
