07/12/2008 Vyacheslav Voinov (Los Angeles Kings): I did not progress with Traktor

Vyacheslav Voinov (Los Angeles Kings) is preparing for the NHL and this is one of the most painful losses suffered by Traktor during the offseason. Itís always unfortunate to lose a promising young player, especially a player who is a fixed leading member in the lineup at just 18. Baev and Denis Ezhov (Buffalo Sabres) also left and now Voinov, so Traktor seems to be facing a shortage of defensemen. Despite the fact that the player has an existing agreement with the club, the management canít do anything but to left the player go and for the fans to wish one of the brightest young talents good fortune. Talent Analysis:
Size & Physical Play: Denis Yezhov is not a very tall player, but he is wide and very strong. He has a low center of gravity and it’s pretty difficult to knock him off the puck and Denis doesn’t really mind going into traffic. He is not, however, a physical defenseman, preferring to use positioning and his stick to tie up his opponents. His endurance is pretty impressive and Denis seems to keep up a high level of energy throughout the game. Defense: Denis is a defensive defenseman. He is very responsible and safe on defense. He also sees the ice well and plays solid positional hockey. Shot: Denis doesn’t stand out with his shooting. He hardly ever uses his shot in the Super League, but does tend to be a bit more offensive on the national team. Denis is more of a defensive defenseman and hasn’t developed this portion of his arsenal. Skating: Skating is definitely one of Yezhov’s strengths. He possesses above average top speed, especially for a defenseman and his technique is also very good. Technical Skills: Denis possesses solid puck handling skills. He is not afraid of the puck and doesn’t dump it every chance he gets. He makes solid, safe decisions with the puck, preferring to give a pass to a guy close buy, rather then sending the puck far up the ice. If there was a clear opportunity for a long pass, he did not hesitate and made the quick decision. However, this didn’t happen often last year, as such behavior wasn’t appreciated by the coaching staff, hence he would have gotten benched. Mental Game: Denis is a very smart and mature player. He appears to be a calm, collected player and does not flinch in critical situations and appears to keep a cool head at all times. This is impressive of a 16 year old playing in the Super League. Overall: Denis is a solid, but slightly undersized defensive defenseman. He needs to bulk up a bit to improve his physical game and work a bit on improving his offensive upside.
Back In Russia:
Denis was born in Togliatti, Russia and started playing hockey in Lada Togliatti’s school of hockey. He has been a member of the ’85 National Team since it’s inception in 2001 and has been once of its first pairing defens
NHL Outlook:
Denis has the potential of becoming a reliable defensive defenseman. He has a solid build, but lacks a large frame. His arrays of skills and impressive level of maturity make him a lock for the second round and if he cracks Lada’s lineup and continues to shine on the National Tea, he may even get picked up late in the first round. As other talented players in the past, he will compete on Russia’s U18 and U20 National Teams and will likely turn some heads.
