Talent Analysis:
Yevgeniy Petrochinin is an offensive minded defensive. At 25 it is tough to consider this player a prospect, as, like many other European players, he has already spent many seasons holding a dominant role on competitive Russian Super League teams that could give AHL and even some NHL teams the run for their money. Yevgeniy is a quick skater and moves well through traffic. Yevgeniy does not inspire any raving comments regarding his defensive play. Defensively he could be compared to a poor man’s Sergei Gonchar. He uses his fast speed to get back on defense and chooses his positions well, rarely making gross errors. As in the case of Gonchar, you will rarely see him delivering any hits on the ice, preferring to tie up the opponent to neutralize him. He is not as big and fast as Sergei Gonchar and his offensive upside is more limited.

Yevgeniy established himself as the best offensive minded Russian defenseman playing in Russia. He has a powerful and well aimed shot. He uses this weapon often, which is uncommon for a European defenseman. Yevgeniy’s shot is comprable to that of Sergei Zubov, though not as refined or as accurate. Besides his hard blistering shot, he is a solid power play quarterback, seeing the ice very well and above average passing skills. His skill set would make him a formidable second unit power play quarterback. Defensively, he is not a liability, but would need an experienced stay at home defensive partner.

NHL Outlook:
The Dallas Stars used their 9th pick in the 6th round of the 1995 NHL Entry Draft to draft Yevgeniy 202nd overall. The Dallas Stars depended heavily on the free agency market to fullfill their needs with prospects such as Roman Lyaschenko receiving little ice time. Yevgeniy was prepared to make the transition to North America after the 1998-99 season, but the Dallas Stars only offered him a two way contract and with so many players on the Stars having one way contracts, it would have been unlikely that Yevgeniy would see any action in the NHL. The same situation has been continuing for the last three seasons, with Yevgeniy announcing his intentions of traveling to Dallas and then cancelling his plans because of Dallas’s lack of interest in him. Finally during the 2002 waiver draft, the Columbus Blue Jackets’ General Manager Doug MacLean surprised the Dallas Stars by selecting one of their unprotected veterans, Kirk Muller. The Dallas Stars wanted him back and traded for him the rights for Yevgeniy to Columbus. The young team’s defensive corps remains thin after only two years of drafting and Yevgeniy is a welcome addition. If he agrees to a contract with the team, he will likely be in Blue Jackets uniform next season. It remains to be seen whether his European style of play and lack of physical presence will cause him problems in the NHL, but there is no doubt that he could at least be a top 6 defenseman on a weaker NHL team such as the Blue Jackets.
