Draft Rankings and Comments:
Rank 1: #4
Rank 2: #5
Rank 3: #8 Ranking Comments:Zharkov struggled to earn any ice time with Cape Bretton and then broke his ankle. He will likely miss 2 more months of hockey, and has reportedly returned back to Russia for the rest of the season, unhappy with the lack of ice time.
Rank 4: #8
Talent Analysis:
Scout 1: Skating: A good skater for a big man, but nothing particularly special...above average acceleration...balanced on his skates, but one of our scouts believed that he "could use more agility in his play", as he tends to be more of a north-south type of player...regarding playing in traffic, as one of our scouts puts it, he isn’t afraid to go into the battle zones; " isn't afraid of executing in heavy traffic and takes position in front of the opposing net"....Zharkov uses his size well to skate through traffic...skating is not one of Zharkov’s strengths, but compliments him well as an overall package. Shot: Posesses a strong wrist shot with very good precision and a quick release...posesses a potent secret weapon
Back In Russia:
Born in Moscow, Zharkov is the product of the Dynamo Moscow hockey school. 2003-04 Season: Zharkov spent the 2003-04 season with Dynamo Moscow’s junior farm club, Dynamo 2. The young forward skated the entire season on the same line with Mikhail Saveliev, and the two proved effective together and even skated together on the 87 born Russian national team. Zharkov continued to skate on Russia’s 87 born national team at every tournament except the February’s U17 tournament in Canada, which he missed due to the knee injury. 2004-05 Season: During the summer of 2004, Evgeni Zharkov was drafted by Cape Breton (QMJHL) in the CHL Import Draft. After skating for Russia at the early August’s U18 Junior World Cup, he joined his new club in Canada.
NHL Outlook:
Egor Zharkov is eligible for the 2005 NHL Entry draft. While Zharkov may not be a great skater or a technical player with soft hands, his size and great shot make him an attractive prospect. The young forward needs shake off the rust of his injury and continue to improve his puckhandling and skating to elevate his status. Unfortunatel, Zharkov’s sub par 2004-05 season has severly declined his overall stock. He was unable to make an impact on Russia’s national team and has not shown much more beyond his shot and size. Zharkov’s lack of agression and will to use his raw talent have also hurt his stock.
RP Draft Projection: Sixth or seventh round selection.
