Scouting Evaluations:
2004 U18 Junior World Cup Evaluation - 2nd Line (Sopin - Antosik - Velichkin)
Draft Rankings and Comments:
Rank 1: #9
Rank 2: #9
Rank 3: #9 Ranking Comments:Dynamo Moscow 2's captain has improved his scoring for Dynamo's junior farm club and holds steady in the rankings.
Rank 4: #9
Rank 1: #9
Rank 2: #9 Ranking Comments:Did not make Russia's U20 squad, but played very well for Russian High League's (Russia 2) Kapitan Stupino. Has also seen some Super League ice time earlier in the season with Dynamo. Possesses a durable 190 pound 5'11 frame and impressive top speed that would do well at the NHL level if his development continues.
Rank 3: #11 Ranking Comments:Alexei Sopin was another highly rated player overlooked at last year's draft due to the differences between the NHL and the Russian professional hockey ruling body. The young forward has a lot of potential and proved his ability to play at the Super League level earlier in the season when he skated for Dynamo (Moscow). Sopin was subsequently loaned by Dynamo to the High League (Russia 2)'s HC Kapitan from Stupino, Russia. There he really made an impact and finished second on the team in scoring. Sopin impresses with his great speed and scoring ability, though his "European" tendencies of lots of speed, but a lack of a physical presence. We believe Sopin has a lot of potential and will further prove himself in the Super League and on the U20 national squad next season.
Rank 1: #22
Rank 2: #27
Rank 3: #27
Talent Analysis:
Scout 1: He takes advantage of his hair-raising speed and strong first-step quickness...possesses good agility and an adequate balance...releases a quick, accurate wrist shot, aiming often at the top shelf... decent slap shot, but he could use it to a greater extent...isn't showing much of a commitment to the defensive aspect of the game and tends to be passive in his own zone at times...possesses a good vision and is capable of solid passes...isn't much of a physical menace and likes the open ice more than having to execute in heavy traffic...the opponents can get under his skin with abrasive play, but they won't be able to hit him very often as his quickness and a flashy style help him to avoid the bone-crunchers.
Scout 2: Similar to Istomin, he drives to the net through the wing using his speed like Istomin does but he is less effective at finishing his chances. He is a good skater but would benefit from being more stable. He is a good stick handler, but just couldn’t score the entire tournament. Sopin can maneuver in heavy traffic well. Still, he needs to be stronger and needs to cover the puck better, as he got knocked off the puck at times. Defensively he is weak, he doesn’t help defense and seems not to like to return to his own end at all.
Scout 3: Weighing 90kg at just 179, he is not overweight, just very wide...a very fast skater...very good technically with the puck...has solid leadership skills
Back In Russia:
Alexei Sopin is another young product of Dynamo Moscow’s farm system. On Dynamo, and with Russia’s ’87 squad, Sopin is an effective tendem with Igor Antosik, similarly to how Mikhail Yunkov (Washington Capitals #62/2004) and Roman Voloshenko (Minnesota Wild #48/2004) were last season on the High League’s Soviet Wings and the ’86 national team. Sopin is the captain of Dynamo Moscow’s
NHL Outlook:
Alexei’s Sopin is eligible for the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. He was eligible for the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, but due to a lack of agreement between the NHL and the Russian Super League, he was not selected along with a score of other Russian prospects. His speed and power make him an attractive prospect. However, he is a sniper, and as such he does need to rekindle his scoring touch to boost his drafting position.
