Talent Analysis:
Scout 1: An effortless skater who takes advantage of his fluid stride and strong first-step quickness to penetrate through opposing defenses...solid agility to go along with his deft in-close finishing skills...solid stickhandling skills...an okay passer...hard and accurate wrist shot...possesses also a solid slap shot, he could only release it more frequently... shows a decent commitment to the defensive duties, but needs improvement here in terms of blocking the opposing passing lanes more effectively...once on a scoring chance, he doesn't miss the opportunity to shoot the puck...could use a bit more vision in his play...made strides in his commitment to the physical play and is willing to perform in traffic, but isn't a physical menace.
Scout 2: Velichkin is a good skater and makes good decisions with the puck. He possesses good passing skills. The young forward is not very effective at finishing the scoring chances and he should be more greedy with the puck and shoot it himself more often. He has hard and accurate wrist shot and is a slightly above average puck handler skills but is not much of a force in heavy traffic. Has gotten better at shooting the puck more often.
Scout 3: Velichkin is a smart player, who sees the ice well... a tall guy and has good size, but isn’t physical, trying instead to beat you with speed...a very good skater...a very technical with very good puckhandling...player has a good shot, but usually hangs around the crease and tries to punch in a rebound...doesn’t contribute much defensively... a solid team player who uses his linemates and creates scoring chances...needs to improve his confidence and aggressiveness. Needs to improve his decision making...hasn’t filled in his frame yet, needs to grow some more.
Back In Russia:
Igor Velichkin is a product of the Metallurg (Magnitogorsk) hockey school, where his father is the general director of the Super League (Russia 1) club. The young forward has risen through Metallurg’s ranks and made his debut on the club’s junior farm club Metallurg 2 during the 2003-04 season. On the 1987 team, he usually skates on the top line and is among the squad’s top three scorers. He has been a member of Russia’s 87 squad since it’s inception, usually skating on the second line. Please refer to the Scouting Evaluations section for detailed information regarding the young player’s performance at various tournaments.
NHL Outlook:
Igor Velichkin is eligible for the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. The young forward displays a solid combination of speed, technical ability and hockey sense. To become more effective, he needs to improve his defensive play and boost his confidence and level of aggressiveness.
