Talent Analysis:
Back In Russia:
Dmitri Subbotin has played in the Red Army system in the beginning of his career, playing professional hockey since the age of 16, starting in 1993 with CSKA farm team, HC Yekaterinburgh. He then was traded to Dynamo Moscow, and only after a few games to Lada Togliatti, one of the strongest teams in the Russia. During his first two seasons in the Super League with Lada Togliatti he performed well, scoring 18 goals and 25 points in 58 games. In the Super League he joined his brother, Andrei Subbotin, who plays for Avangard Omsk. Dmitri has great speed and strong puck handling that have secured him a permanent spot in Dynamo Moscow’s line up this year. This year Dynamo management did not plan to assign such a leading role to Dmitri, but due to the departure of the entire top line and a few other players out of Dynamo for the NHL or other teams, the organization had no choice but to look to its young players like Dmitri Subbotin and Alexei Tereschenko to step up and support the team. Dmitri did just that, becoming one of the team’s top scorers (3rd in points) with 6 goals and 9 points in 29 games.
NHL Outlook:
Dmitri was drafted by the New York Rangers with their 3rd pick, 76th overall. He has evolved into a dependable left wing since his draft and was ranked as their top left wing prospect during the 1999 season. In the 2000 expansion draft, he was picked by the Columbus Blue Jackets from the New York Rangers. It was planned for the young left wing to remain in Russia during the 2000-01 season. This was a wise decision on the part of the Blue Jackets as Dmitri has performed very well for Dynamo Moscow this season and has shown signs that he is maturing. Subbotin has continued to be one of Russia's top checking forwards. He will spend the 2002-03 season with CKSA Moscow.
