Talent Analysis:
Scout 1: A flashy skater who keeps his feet moving...good acceleration and agility...solid top-end speed which can burn defenders...crafty puckhandler with an above-average hand-eye coordination...likes to shoot the puck, utilizing on his very good accurate wrist shot with a sharp release...should use his slap shot to a bigger extent...doesn't play a physical style and isn't a significant force in heavy traffic thanks to his smallish frame...his speed enables him to return to his own zone in time, but needs to play in position better...posesses a strong skill set.
Scout 2: Quick agile skater....a very good forechecker...good on the penalty kill...reliable defensively and returns to help out...still raw in the defensive zone....a very tenacious player with good wrist shot...possesses solid passing skills...has a good vision and hockey sense...finds open spaces well...puts forth a solid effort all the time, but needs to improve his physical play.
Scout 3: A playmaking center, but can also play wing...a very good passer...average skating and is not all that fast...above average technically...very weak physically...average and not a very strong shot...not one of the top players on the national team, but will likely continue to get invited...can’t handle the physical play and he does not learn, he will have trouble making it at a higher level of hockey...not very good defensively.
Back In Russia:
Alexander Kucheryavenko was born in Moscow and has spent the past several seasons with the Moscow junior club Rus. During the latter part of the 2002-03 season, Kucheryavenko delivered a very impressive performance at the finals of the 1987 DOB junior league playoffs, where he skated for Dynamo’s 87 squad since his Rus was eliminated. The young forward has been in the pool of players selected for Russia’s 87 squad, but he was usually one of the last eliminated at the training camp. He only managed to skate in one tournament during each of the 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons, primarily in a fourth line role. During the 2004-05 season, Kucheryavenko has risen to a bit more prominent role, consistently receiving an invitation to the squad. Please find the evaluation of Kucheryavenko’s performance at each international tournament in the scouting section of his profile.
NHL Outlook:
Alexander Kucheryavenko is eligible for the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. The young center is an impressive package of skill and hockey sense, but his lack of physical presence hurts his overall draft stock. He needs to become more effective in traffic, apply himself more defensively and continue working on his shot to raise his game to the next level.
