Draft Rankings and Comments:
2005 NHL ENTRY DRAFT
Rank 2: #27
Rank 3: #31
Rank 4: #28
Talent Analysis:
Scout 1: a good skater with above-average agility...could use better acceleration...solid top-end speed and balance...very good accurate wrist shot...likes to fire one-timers...solid snap shot...doesn't use his slap shot very often...digs for the pucks along the boards...solid puckhandling skills...slightly above average vision, but tends to hold on the puck sometimes too long...average defensive play, is willing to return back to his own zone and help out, but is raw in positioning and marking his man...solid in traffic, but could use more aggressiveness in his play.
Scout 2: good skater, but could use better acceleration....crashes the net well...has accurate wrist shot...solid puckhandling skills but could work on them more... could use his body better...his passes should be more accurate.
Scout 3: Above average skater, but has an average top speed...average technically...good wrist shot...afraid of contact and is indecisive with the puck...tries to help out defensively, but isn’t very effective at it...fights near the boards, but isn’t very effective.
Back In Russia:
Andrei Grankin is a product of the Soviet Wings hockey school in Moscow. The young forward has consistently been a member of Russia’s ’87 born national team since the winter of 2004. Grankin is yet to make his professional debut, as he has just made his debut this season with the Soviet Wings second squad, Soviet Wings 2. He will likely have to wait until the 2005-06 season to make his professional debut in the High League (Russia 2), which is where the Soviet Wings compete.
NHL Outlook:
Andrei Grankin is eligible for the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. The young forward has impressed with his performance thus far on Russia’s U18 national team. He showcased his offensive upside, but his lack of acceleration, average technical level and average hockey sense make it tough for him to stand out, putting him in the latter rounds of the draft, if he gets picked at all. The young forward’s draft stock will hinge on his performance at the U18 WJC.
RussianProspects Draft Projection: eighth or ninth round.
