09/01/2008 Are Artem Chernov (Dallas Stars)'s drug problems back?!

Continental Hockey League (KHL) -  After rising to become a Russian hockey's star and then dropping into the depths of horribly drug addiction and only to fight hard to return to the top of Russian hockey, it appears that Artem Chernov (Dallas Stars) maybe battling drugs once again. The young forward and former Dallas Stars prospect has reportedly been taken off HC MVD's starting roster and the club's press correspondent reported that Chernov may miss the 2008-09 season due to a medical condition and necessary treatment that he is already undertaken. While the release was very vague, considering Chernov's past history it appears to mean that the young forward may be fighting another bout with drug addiction. It was especially unfortunate when considering how far he has come in the last two seasons in the Super League, during which he led HC MVD.

Yuri Trubachev (Calgary Flames) upstaged Igor Grigorenko’s (Detroit Red Wings) return to Cherepovets by tallying twice and helping the home club beat Grigorenko’s Lada 3:2. Grigorenko did his best to keep Lada in the game, notching a goal and creating a couple of other scoring chances, but to no avail. READ MORE

Talent Analysis:
Artem Chernov does not have a large frame, standing at only 5""10, and 183 lb. One of his main weaknesses is his lack of physical presence, but he is very hard working. Artem does have a knack for scoring goals when no one expects it from him. He has excellent vision of the ice and uses his line mates very well. Artem Chernov also possesses great positioning, able to be in the right place at the right time to make a creative play. According to a Russian Hockey expert, Maxim Dostoyevskiy, he believes that Artem Chernov "may become a decent two-way second liner in Jamie Langerbrunner's mold.
Back In Russia:
2002-03 Season Review: Artem Chernov rebounded from a mediocre 2001-02 season with a solid performance. The young center seemed to have the knack to be in the right spot at the right time, scoring a lot of his goals on the rebounds. Chernov was one of Avangard
NHL Outlook:
Artem primarily got noticed by the NHL scouts at the 2000 U18 World Junior Championship, where he centered two NHL prospects Pavel Vorobiev and Alexei Smirnov who were picked 11th and 12th overall in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. Artem showed creativity and a great work ethic at the tournament, earning him a berth in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. The Dallas Stars picked him 162nd overall late in the 5th round. Artem has been developing steadily and has become one of the trusted, reliable second line finishers on the strong Avangard Omsk Super League club. Using his great hockey sense and shot, he has boosted his performance in 2002-03, returning in force from the sophmore slump of 2001-02.
