Draft Rankings and Comments:
2006 NHL ENTRY DRAFT
Rank 1: #30
Rank 2: #15 Ranking Comments:A reliable blue liner who has held his own in international competition. Zubov doesn't particularly stand out in any category, but is a solid all around blueliner.
Rank 3: #17 Ranking Comments:Zubov is a reliable, steady blue liner who does not stand out in any particular category, but does not fall through anywhere either. He reminds of Tyutin during his days with SKA (St. Petersburg), where he fulfilled primarily defensive responsibilities and similarly did his job well, but did not stand out in any particular area of play. Zubov lost some ground in the ratings due to his mediocre performance at the U18 WJC. There, he failed to meet expectations and physically was unable to compete with the bigger North American squads, over holding the puck, even faltering in certain one on one situations. Still, the raw size and ability is there and Zubov is among the top Russian blue liners available in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, though unfortunately the talent level drops off dramatically after Alexandrov and Vyshnevsky.
2007 NHL ENTRY DRAFT
Rank 1: #44
Rank 2: #40
Rank 3: #40
Talent Analysis:
Scout 1: An above-average skater with a solid acceleration and agility...decent foot speed...adequate balance but still could work on lower-body strength...a solid stickhandler who can make quick puck moves...a decent shooter from the point but should get his attempts through more often...could use a harder snap shot...a decent player on the power play units...a two-way defenseman...works effectively on the offensive blue line and can battle in the opposing slot...tends to do too much with the puck which leads to bad giveaways...is prone to the odd mistake when rushing the puck...can lay a solid hit on the opponents, but still needs to use his frame to a bigger extent...a smallish blueliner needs to show more of a mean streak to overcome his average size, with a growth spurt not likely at this point...prone to odd positional mistakes...a right-shooting defenseman.
Scout 2: a solid defensive defenseman... brought up in the Lada system but has been skating in the Lokomotiv system for a while now...above average skater, but doesn’t stand out with his top speed or acceleration... doesn’t really stand out in any category, but everything is how it should be and he is reliable and strong in every category... doesn’t shoot the puck often and so difficult to evaluate if it is at all effective ...more European
Back In Russia:
Igor Zubov was born in Togliatti, Russia. He is a product of the Lada hockey school, though he joined Lokomotiv (Yaroslav)’s hockey system after the 2002-03 season. The young blue liner became a member of Russia’s 88 born national team during the 2004-05 season. He has been a consistent member of the team since then and will represent Russia at the 2006 U18 World Junior Championships. Zubov made his 1st League (Russia 3) debut during the 2004-05 season, but really started to come on and make an impact during the following 2005-06 season, spending all his time with Lokomotiv 2. He has yet to make his Super League debut and considering Lokomotiv’s depth on defense, that debut will have to wait until the 2006-07 season.
NHL Outlook:
Igor Zubov is eligible for the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. The young defenseman brings a solid package of skill, size and overall ability to the table, but while he has no apparent weaknesses, he does not stand out in any particular area either. In this regard, he reminds a bit of New York Islanders defensive prospect Alexei Stonkus, who was a reliable two way blue liner, but who did not stand out during his draft year. In the case of Stonkus, that young blue liner broke out the following season before suffering a career threatening neck injury. Zubov may follow suit, as his reliability and solid play will eventually earn him a call up to the Super League. Still, even if successful, Zubov’s NHL upside is limited to that of a fifth or sixth defenseman, and accordingly, he will likely be drafted in fourth or fifth round if an NHL - Super League transfer agreement is signed, and somewhere between fifth to seventh round if there is no agreement signed prior to the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.
