Draft Rankings and Comments:
2006 NHL ENTRY DRAFT
Rank 1: #18
Rank 2: #24
Rank 3: #37
2008 NHL ENTRY DRAFT
Rank 1: #25
Rank 2: #25
Talent Analysis:
Scout 1: A decent skater with solid acceleration and agility...average first-step quickness...uses an adequately effective, but average stride...should add more bulk to his lower-body...crafty stickhandling skills...progressed in corralling of the difficult passes and can execute at a high velocity.. can deke the opposing players...possesses a decent array of shots...releases a fast wrist shot...snap shot should be harder...should use the slap shot more often...drives to the net more hard and is making strides in his physical assertiveness...an average passer, capable of making some accurate feeds...doesn't play an aggressive style, but doesn't back down from scuffles for the pucks...very determined in the corners...an adequate hitter...doesn’t give up on plays and works hard... willing to return back but is no defensive specialist...doesn't tend to take odd shifts off...plays his shifts with a good determination.
Back In Russia:
Alexander Ryabev was born in Yaroslavl and is a product of the Lokomotiv hockey school. The young forward is a long time member of Russia’s 1988 born national team, making his debut during the 2003-04 season. Ryabev moved up from Lokomotiv’s 1988 born squad to the professional club’s junior farm team Lokomotiv 2 during the 2004-05 season. solidified his position there during the following 2005-06 season, spending the entire time with the squad.
NHL Outlook:
Alexander Ryabev is eligible for the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. The young forward provides an interesting combination of skill and scoring ability, but needs to further improve his skating and physical play to become a solid draft prospect. His international experience has boosted his exposure to the scouting community, but as the last couple of draft seasons have proven, exposure doesn’t help as much in being drafted out of Russia any more. Another concern is Ryabev’s upside, as it is unclear whether this young forward will be able to develop beyond being a supporting cast type of player. If the NHL and the Super League sign a transfer agreement, Ryabev will likely be picked up in the sixth round. If no agreement is reached, Ryabev will be right on the bubble of possibly being overlooked.
