Draft Rankings and Comments:
Rank 1: #11
Rank 2: #18
Rank 3: #19
Talent Analysis:
Scout 1: a decent skater for a big player...should further upgrade on his first-step quickness and acceleration...solid balance and lower-body strength...should work on his agility and lateral movement...okay backwards skating...should further upgrade on his top-end speed...a defensively-orientated blueliner who doesn't possess the offensive vision to contribute on the attack effectively...adequate stickhandling skills...can't handle the puck okay pincher...average passing skills and offensive vision...decent short-distance passer...should work on the timing of his passes...a solid shot from the point with adequate accuracy, but could unleash it more average power play quarterback who can't distribute quick short passes to make the opposing box moving...stays back in his own end and works adequately hard down low...takes his man out of the play...needs to learn how to make his size more to his advantage and show his nasty edge more often...won't jump at you every shift, but plays a reliable style in his own end...decent positional play but is prone to the odd mistake when performing on a penalty killing unit.
08/09 update: the young defender has grown up...plays with more confidence...has improved in every area, both technically and phisically...still has to work on his physical play in order to prevent the opponents space in the offensive end...okay positioning...has improved his decision making and plays more effectively...doesn't risk long passes, prefers tape-to-tape distribution...covers well the passing lanes...should play a little bit more focused and with a bit more hurt by the aggressive forechecking...a decent, promising defenseman who still has a long path in front of him to become a KHL regular, let alone an NHL-level defenseman, but he has some potential as well as some good qualities...
Back In Russia:
Maxim Isaev is a product of the Dynamo Moscow hockey school. This is his first year with the main team as he played most of his career in Dynamo-89 junior team or with Dynamo-2 farm team. On the international stage he has never particularly shined, but with team Russia he played in a number of tournaments, included 2006 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament.
