10/15/2007 Round 16: Vorobiev (Toronto Maple Leafs) battles Darcy Verot & wins!

Super League -  The top start of the 16th round is undoubtedly Dmitri Vorobiev (Toronto Maple Leafs) and not for his offensive or defensive capabilities, but for successfully standing up toe to toe with Canadian enforcer Darcy Verot, who joined HC Vityaz this past offseason. Vorobiev fought Verot twice and won the punching contests both times. Interestingly this was also the game reviewed by the Russian National Team selection coach Vladimir Vasiliev, who undoubtedly was happy with what he saw from Vorobiev as a player who could give Russia a physical edge it often lacks. Beyond Vorobiev, Anton Babchuk (Carolina Hurricanes) unleashed his cannon against HC Neftkhimik, scoring his third of the season from the blue line. Yuri Dobryshkin (Atlanta Thrashers) added his league leading 11th goal in a losing effort against champions Metallurg. READ MORE

Some such as Avangard Omsk and Metallurg Magnitogorsk have strived to stay on the same trek. Others, such as the league's favorite Ak Bars Kazan that is known for the high flying Morozov - Zinovjev - Zaripov line, coped with some significant changes. Talent Analysis:
Yuri Dobryshkin is not a big guy, standing at 6"0 and 193 pounds. He has a fairly low center of gravity and can withstand some punishment. Yuri is a good skater, able to move well through traffic. He is a tough player and does not hesistate to mix up and skate right through the opposition, if necessary. Yuri has good puck control, he can dazzle you with some impressive moves which leave defensemen behind. He has good vision of the ice and uses his line mates well, often sharing the puck. He has a fairly strong and precise shot with a quick release. He can also shoot the puck ⌠from the hip while on the move or right after a maneuver. These shots are often impressive, but they create serious scoring chances for his line mates in the crease. Despite the smaller size, Yuri""s game has the tough, physical edge to it. He fights hard along the boards and though he can simply be tied up or pushed to the ice by a bigger opponent, he punishes the opposition with hits, and less legal moves with his stick. Besides his offensive talents, he can be described as a role player, fighting hard for his team and giving the opposing players a lot of reasons to want to beat him down to the ice.

Defensively, Yuri plays well. He fights along the boards and chooses his positions well. He is a swift skater and can take off on a uneven break, but when he is in the defensive zone, defense comes first. He tries to be a physical presence, but his smaller size does get him into some trouble against bigger opponents on defense and on offense. On some occasions, he would fight for positioning in the crease or against the boards and a defenseman would sweep him out and to the ground, taking him out of the play altogether. He has learned to deal with these larger opponents and has become stable and strong on the skates. Overall, Yuri is an intelligent, talented offensive forward with a physical edge to his game. He is a decent puck handler and a good skater. He does need to work on his shot and improve his strength.
Back In Russia:
2002-03 Season Review: After a sub par 2001-02 season with the Ak Bars Kazan, Dobryshkin left Kazan and signed a two year deal with Severstal Cherpovets. This move elevated him from the third to the first line of a very competitive team. While with Kazan, he played the role of a gritty, third line checking forward with a scoring touch, and played the role well. With Severstal, Dobryshkin started the season on a tear, eventually earning the league
NHL Outlook:
Yuri Dobryshkin was drafted in sixth round of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, 159th overall by the Atlanta Thrashers. He was draft eligible the previous year, but it was only after a strong season with the Soviet Wings and with the Russian National team was he really noticed by NHL teams. At the age of 19, he was ranked 18th among European players, but due to his relative obscurity and lack of size, he fell to the sixth round. Since then, Yuri has given the Tharshers"" management a lot of reason to be glad to have him in their system. Considering his skills and spirited, physical style of hockey, Yuri would not be out of place in the NHL. The Thrashers should have seriously considered bringing him over this past summer. Yuri will likely have another strong season in the Super League next year, and the Thrashers should definitely take a look at this forward next summer. He will not produce a point per game, but Yuri will provide a reliable third line presence with a consistent production and responsible play.
