01/25/2009 Alexander Vasiliev back on track with Vityaz Chekhov

Continental Hockey League (KHL) - features an article about Alexander Vasiliev , who is a nineteen years old right wing with a knack for scoring. He is a player that was a bit overhyped back in the days as he has been overlooked in the past two drafts and, more importantly, for the major tournaments with team Russia after the 2006-07 season. In that year he had a very strong Ivan Hlinka tournament, as Russia conquered a bronze medal and he was the team’s top scorer, outscoring the likes of Alexei Cherepanov (New York Rangers), Evgeni Dadonov (Florida Panthers) and Sergei Korostin (Dallas Stars). 07/23/2008 Sergei Korostin (Dallas Stars): I got tired sitting in the stands

Last season he was given some serious complements. Everyone talked about this young Dynamo Moscow school forward Sergei Korostin (Dallas Stars) as a potential star of the U20 Russian national team. But this season did not work out for the young forward. Instead of skating for Dynamo he got to practice with HC Shahter from Prokopievsk (High League Russia 2 club - translator); instead of skating for the U20 national team - a quick departure for one of the North American junior hockey leagues. Sport publication correspondent was able to meet with the 19 year old forward in Prokopievsk, where he is spending his summer vacation with his parents. (interview of Evgeny Ivanov from Sport Day by Day publication) READ MORE

Draft Rankings and Comments:
Rank 1: #2
Rank 2: #2
Rank 3: #2
Talent Analysis:
Scout 1: a very good skater .. uses an effortless stride .. strong first-step quickness and agility .. uses multiple gears to intimidate the opposing players .. good turns .. possesses a good top-end speed and an ability to handle the puck in full flight .. should add more bulk to his yet thin lower-body .. possesses smooth stickhandling skills which enable him make quick dekes to maintain control of the puck and win one-on-one situations .. corrals difficult passes well using his skates or stick .. should cover the puck better with his body .. an effective forechecker who approaches the opposing players quickly .. difficult to keep under opponent control right after a lost faceoff where he looks to disturb the opponents .. possesses okay scoring instincts .. smooth when finishing chances in-close .. possesses a dangerous wrist and snap shot with a quick release .. slap shot should be harder .. should further upgrade on his playmaking ability .. doesn't have outstanding smarts when playing on a powerplay unit .. prone to wrong-timed passes .. thrived in open space rather than in heavy traffic .. needs to show a bigger defensive awareness .. was slow at marking his man and raw in the ability to block the opposing passing lanes .. occasionally careless after losing possession of the puck .. prone to losing temper when pucks don't go his way.
Scout 2: a smooth skater with above average speed...possesses average size...a capable stickhandler who handles the puck very well...has a dangerous wrist shot, especially when close to the net...needs to shoot the puck more often instead of over-handling it...above average acceleration...very much an offensive minded player, always looking to break out of the defensive zone...needs to be more involved in the defensive end of the ice though does try to help, he tends to float out to the blue line...aggressive and doesn’t hesitate to drive through traffic, though needs more strength to be able to effectively compete for the puck...not yet effective under physical pressure...needs to bulk up and improve his strength on the skates...needs to improve his vision of the ice and how well he uses his linemates
