06/22/2010 2010 Russian Draft Preview - The Russian Factor

National Hockey League (NHL) -  Since the institution of the new CBA and since the NHL-IIHF agreement ran out, teams and fans started getting familiar with the infamous “Russian Factor”. 2009 had only seven players drafted from Russia, 2008 had 9, 2007 had only 9 as well and this includes players like Panthers’ Dmitry Kulikov (Florida Panthers), who played in North America. In spite of the good quality up for grabs in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, it’s unlikely to see a much larger number of Russian players drafted. But does the Russian factor actually play significant a role? If we analyze the picks, it seems that the Russian factor is a bit overblown. ( article by Alessandro Seren Rosso) READ MORE

Draft Rankings and Comments:
Rank 1: #1
Rank 2: #1 Ranking Comments:A technically sound offensive defenseman who's among the top QMJHL rookies both statistically and in the quality of play.
Talent Analysis:
A talented offensive defenseman...Skating: smooth skater with very good, but not great, speed and acceleration...good skating technique, as expected from a top Russian player...good backwards skating too...Physical play and defense: Playing in Canada improved his physical play...he's not hurt by the opponents' hits along the boards...strong player, plays hard when it's needed...hard to knock off the puck...a good backchecker, can land hits when needed...can cover holes from the partners...good covering back in the zone...Offensive play: Great offensive instincts...knows when join the rush and when remain in the zone...big shot, accurate too...very good reading of the ice, especially on the powerplay...excellent puck mover, once again especially with the man advantage...can find the open man with relative ease...Mental game: Doesn't feel the to play the rush moments...good "thinker" when on ice...Overall: A promising offensive defenseman with powerplay quarterback potential...
Back In Russia:
A native of Lipetsk, Kulikov is a product of the HC Rus hockey school of Moscow. He has always been a regular of Russia-90 national team, with which he played in several international tournaments. After the 2008 CHL Import Draft he decided to move in North America and he won three individual trophies in his first QMJHL season. He's now among the top defensemen for the upcoming 2009 NHL Entry Draft.
NHL Outlook:
Dmitri Kulikov has number one defenseman potential because of his strong defensive play and skilled offensive game. He has all what it takes to be one of the first defensemen picked in the next draft, and playing in NA already didn't hurt at all his stock like his coaged in the KHL.
