| Top 10 Russia prospects for 2009
National Hockey League (NHL) - The 2009 Russian draft class doesn't look as good as the last one, which produced Nikita Filatov (Columbus Blue Jackets), Evgeny Grachev, Dmitri Kugryshev and Memorial Cup champion Andrei Loktionov (Los Angeles Kings). At the last U18 World Championships, Russia earned a silver medal mostly thanks to the contribution of the 2010s like Kirill Kabanov and Vladimir Tarasenko. But because of Russia's depth, there are some good talents available in two weeks in Montreal, including some overage ones overlooked in the last drafts who somewhat raised their stock recently.
Hockeysfuture's top 10 at a glance:
1. Dmitri Orlov, D, Metallurg Novokuznetsk
2. Maxim Chudinov, D, Severstal Cherepovets
3. Pavel Chernov, C, Atlant Mytischi
4. Alexander Avtsin , RW, Dynamo Moscow
5. Sergei Andronov, RW, Lada Togliatti
6. Anton Burdasov, LW, Traktor Chelyabinsk
7. Sergei Chvanov, C, Severstal Cherepovets
8. Georgi Berdyukov, D, SKA St. Petersburg
9. Nikita Dvurechensky, LW, Dynamo Moscow

| Lada Togliatti beats Ak Bars in Kazan
Continental Hockey League (KHL) - After a hard fought, low scoring match, Lada conquered a shoot out victory against Ak Bars in Kazan's Tatneft arena. In a match full of ex players in both sides, Fredrik Norrena and Vasily Koshechkin (Tampa Bay Lightning) defended the creases being very effective in their guards as they managed to allow only two goals in the whole contest. Many other prospects played in this game, including Anton Krysanov (Phoenix Coyotes) and 2009 eligible Sergei Andronov. | 2009 WJC: Russia beats Latvia in tournament’s opener
U20 World Junior Championships - With the minimal possible effort against such an unassuming team as Latvia, team Russia got the first victory of the tournament with an easy 4-1 score. The final result doesn’t tell the whole story though Nemchinov’s team effort hasn’t been the best they could offer. Daniil Alistratov looked solid between the pipes and concluded the match with only fourteen saves, allowing a late goal to Ozolins that didn’t put Russian leadership in danger. Being the goalkeeper not much tested should have drove the match to a bigger gap in terms of scoring, but Enkuzens’ forty saves rescued his team from a blow-out defeat. Another good sign for Nemchinov are the only three penalties whistled against his players. Lada Togliatti’s Sergei Andronov has been named player of the game for Russia, thanks to his assist to Pavel Chernov ’s game winning goal scored halfway through the game. READ MORE | | 10/14/2007

| Draft Rankings and Comments: |
2007 NHL ENTRY DRAFT Rank 2: #17 Rank 3: #18 2009 NHL ENTRY DRAFT Rank 1: #11 Rank 2: #7 Ranking Comments:his stock has been rising rapidly after an excellent WJC. Still, the speedy winger needs to bulk up, though his level of technique is very good, as well as his hands and his skating. He is also having a strong KHL season, with eight goals scored already, in a not stacked Lada Togliatti. Finally he found some ice time at his third season with the main team. | | Talent Analysis: |
| A talented winger...very good technique and smooth hands...excellent skating, doesn't lack mobility and balance...thanks to his excellent skating he's a fast player with very good acceleration...likes to play the puck and skate throughout the offensive zone...very good nose for the net, dangerous without the puck with a good positioning...not a physical player, he tries back in the zone but isn't too effective...tries to play out of trouble and stay off the traffic...the areas of the game he needs work on are physical play and overall defensive awareness... |
| Back In Russia: |
| Sergei Andronov was born in Penza, Russia, and moved to Togliatti during the 2005-06 season. He hasn't had such a brilliant career with the national team until the 08-09 season where he was picked by Sergei Nemchinov to play in the top lines at the WJC, where he played very well scoring eight points in seven games, with three goals. In the same year he played the second full season with Lada in the Russian top league, playing well once again and scoring eight goals and four assists, increasing his production from seven to twelve points, good numbers for a player of his age. |
| NHL Outlook: |
| After being overlooked for two years, the 2009 NHL Draft might be the one in which he'll be picked. His strong WJC and 2008-09 KHL season raised his stock and he's now RP.com's seventh player for the draft. His style should fit well the post-lockout NHL and he has the ceiling to become a good second line left or right wing.
2009-10 update: After the draft he didn't report to St. Louis training camp and now he plays a core role in Lada Togliatti's lineup. The team's financial situation is very bad, and Andronov might have to find a new team in the next offseason. |
